Jimmy Meltrigger
What if Becky had stayed with him instead of getting with Mark?
shareHaha, I'm surprised no one's brought this kind of topic up more! Obviously, Becky would've been better off with her earlier boyfriends—they were much more conventionally intelligent and well-rounded. But as Roseanne noted herself on the show–lots of women follow Becky's eventual route: going for the "bad boy", for various reasons of their own.
shareI got the impression her former boyfriends or love interest were afraid of Dan and Roseanne.
shareIt always bothered me that Chip and Becky's other boyfriends thought themselves better than Dan and Roseanne and that was ok. Mark, was lower class as were they and a biker like Dan, wanted to respect them but Roseanne and Dan looked down on him.
I like Becky (unlike a lot of people on here). I think she was better off than Mark. He really did love her, he was loyal, and hard working. Mechanic is a decent job. I don't think she would be happy with her exs. If they got married, they would divorce.

I'm gonna have to pull the STOP lever on this. Jimmy Meltriger was rarely on screen, and when he was he seemed to bond very well with Dan about football if I recall. Chip was always cool as well, even good-naturedly telling his parents "this is how it always is" when Dan was rough-housing with DJ.
Mark started off completely disrespectful. How could you forget that introductory episode? He called Dan by his FIRST NAME and was completely rude and brusque! No teenager can pull that off with their date's parents!
I realize his character changed later, but so did (DAN's) attitude i.e. respect towards him. It was just Roseanne who mostly kept up her b*tchiness cuz, well, that was her way.
I feel like Mark did try, but they felt they were better than him. My whole point is this, he never thought he was better than them and always wanted Becky with her family. If Becky was with her other boyfriends, she would have probably became one of those women who only deals with/does holidays and weekends with their inlaws. Honestly, I wouldn't blame them. Yes, it happens. When I first got married, I was more with my inlaws due to them living far away (it was literally impossible to have two of a holiday) and my FIL having health issues. I can imagine it staying that way if my inlaws didn't like my family.
shareYour original post wasn't about "what if" Becky ended up marrying someone else and how it'd turn out; you basically said Jimmy and Chip clearly displayed arrogance (on the show). I don't think they did.
I think Chip did (his family was even worse). Jimmy, now that I think about it, wasn't as proud.

except they screwed up in s8, when Dan was in the hospital after the wedding heart attack, he claims Jimmy was DARLENE'S "first boyfriend", when he was Becky's.
whether this was one of the few breaks with show canon, or a clue that the book idea finale was already taking shape.

I don't remember that.. Why would they mention Jimmy then? And Chip was Becky's first boyfriend. Darlene also dated a guy named Jimmy in between breakups with David.
i think she could have made a good couple with Chip or Dean.
Chip probably went to college and got a decent job and would have encouraged Becky to go to college even if that means starting at a community college first.
Dean same way.
I guess overall if Becky had stsayed with the earlier guys then Darlene would have never met David.
