in the episode "therapy" season 4 ep 20.
Dan talks about how he had to let go the tattoo artist and he says ,
"it is a shame because he does such nice work"
that tattoo doesn't look it came from a professional. it looks like he got it when he was in prison. not saying Dan was in prison. but it looks like a prison style tattoo.
the "ROSE" tattoo that he couldn't stand the pain to get the other four letters, "ANNE"?
probably just a friend wanting to start the business would have been my guess. I always took the "nice work" line to be sarcastic.
but yeah, I always thought they were probably just goofing around off set and either her or Laurie wrote it on him in pen/marker, then they worked it into the ep, since we never saw it again. It's definitely missing in the ep where he has to shave his pits "for medical reasons" and does armpit farts. I think that was the last time he showed off his arms on the show, and the few times he's bared arms since there has obviously been no trace of it.
(In The Electric Mist, his first scene is floating in the pool, only shorts and shades. Alpha House sleeping in shower and that was a BODY DOUBLE whose backside/hip gets shown, who doesn't even have the same body shape as John. Babe and def Everybody's All-American and Flintstones would have been before this scene.)
