What is the China Beach location supposed to be?

It has a hospital, a bar/nightclub, a beach, a jet fighter base, a civilian hooker/entrepreneur. Is it just everything combined in one base? I just don't understand the site.

The real China Beach was the nickname for My Khe beach on the South China Sea in the city of Da Nang, in northern South Vietnam. The show was supposed to be set in a similar area.

The location is kind of murky because of the nature of shooting for TV. The sets are in various exterior and interior locations, so we can't actually see the whole layout of the fictional area, but it often looks like the town is right outside a gate while also appearing to be away from a populated city.
