I have seen a listing on amazon.com for season 1. I was wondering if there were plans to release all of the seasons as individual sets? It seems like it might be cheaper to purchase seasons individually as opposed to the box set. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Yes, after the box set came out in limited release, the plan was to release single season sets in the broader market place. Season Two is ready for pre-order on Amazon, I believe. First season set is identical to what was included in the box set, as far as I can see.
They'll probably come out with the complete box set in wider release too once they run through the seasons. Probably it'll be cheaper, but I'm glad I bought mine when I did, as this was something I'd been waiting for since the advent of DVDs.
I'm torn between wanting the series on DVD, and trying to save money.
You can save a lot of money by checking it out from the public library. So far, I've only been able to get seasons one and two, but the rest will come eventually.
It looks like it's happened in a staggered release. I've managed to find some "not yet confirmed" reports that Season 3 will be released as it's own set in May 2014. Let's hope.
I haven't viewed the complete box set, which I hope is a lot better than the individual seasons. Apparently the song licensing has caused quite a few scenes to have music replaced. I know at least one scene was removed in Season 1, so I suspect there are quite a few removed. That would explain why watching it again decades later it feels a lot more choppy than it did when it first aired.
I would have loved to know the executive decision process behind delaying the DVD release. Maybe there was a distribution rights issue compounded by the music licensing issues. I know that the quality of the images aren't going to be as good as more current series, along with the aspect ration. But the overall DVD production quality and set up is so inferior I have to wonder if they dusted off the DVDs and tacked on the newer cast interviews as an after thought.
China Beach was such a great, ground-breaking series in it's way, I'm glad it's finally available, but it's so frustrating the DVDs are so poorly done.
There is a disclaimer at the beginning of each season about the video quality. It doesn't bother me; it looks like TV, and it also has that murky M.A.S.H. look (the movie, not the TV series). Had I watched the show in 1988-1991, I would have seen it on a 20-inch TV, so this still looks good on one over twice as big with much more resolution, and much better than any videotape that old would have looked. As for the music, I started noticing very different music in some Season 3 scenes. There are a few bar scenes with very obvious generic '80s-esque music.
By now, early 2015, all four seasons are out as individual DVDs from Amazon and other sources - plus a 2013 reunion DVD that just arrived. This is an absolutely terrific series and it does slowly darken, year by year. I'm halfway into Season 3 and am rationing out the episodes rather than rushing through. This series overall is a very real experience. I was a Medevac dispatcher in II Corps in '71 and did field time at the hospitals in Pleiku and Phu Bai. Not at China Beach, unfortunately!
