Great movie from the 80s generation

This movie is like an old friend, whenever I catch it on TV, I always watch it and it is great...was one of my favorite movies when I was about 12-14 years old...story is kind of cheesy and so is alot of the acting, but hey, it was the eighties and who cares...its just fun to watch. Great soundtrack too. In my opinion this is one of the best 80s, outdoor, group of kids movies out there...stands up well even to Stand By Me. Highly entertaining if you are a lover of cheesy 80s kid movies.

I loved this movie, too. It features some great nature scenes. I didn't like the wimpiness of Sean Astin's character. Vic did everthing the right way and he was very patient and understanding with those kids. I think that those townie kids would have done better to leave Alan at home. Alan really ruined everything when he couldn't handle danger. He is the one that drove Vic to anger. Alan could have just cleaned the fish and did things right but he was always playing the idiot part. I was always rooting for Vic during the movie.

I just caught the end of this movie on Showtime, starting right at the scene where Alan can't make it across the cliff face and Vic and the other boys are trying to help him. I immediately knew I had seen this movie before but I couldn't remember what it was called, which, of course, brought me to IMDb. :)
As a kid, I identified with and rooted for Alan and feared Vic, but now as an adult who has learned a lot of life lessons, I can see where Vic was coming from and wish that Alan had listened and tried harder. I still don't think Vic ever should've gotten rough with the boys, and he was a little off towards the end there, but I could see what he was trying to do.
I had completely forgotten about this movie, and now I want to watch it again, from the beginning!
Also, I would've thought it was filmed in Oregon or northern California. Funny that Sean Astin's acting career brought him back to New Zealand so many years later... :)

My best friend loved this movie when we were kids and made me watch it at least 3 times... I thought it was okay at the time, but having recently watched it again I like it a lot more now... Great 80's coming of age flick.

’Cause there’s thunder in your heart... Every move is like lighning!

This was a great movie and I use to catch it all of the time on USA Network back in the day when they had a lot better entertainment than what they have now on. I even remember catching this on USA UP ALL NIGHT on Friday and Saturday nights at one time.

Any time this movie came on I would sit and watch it. I have not seen this in like forever you know!

Both Alan and Vic were in the wrong...and the right sometimes. You don't take a wimpy city kid and bully him into being a "man" or whatever. BUT...Alan also chose to not do the easy things right, like gutting the fish. They both learned a thing or two from each other.

I have to very much agree with you on that! They both learned from each other and they were both in the wrong with their actions on what they did.
