Broken leg scene used to creep me out

When I was a kid, that scene where Kevin Bacon falls off the rock and breaks his leg used to creep me out. Especially when he rips his pants-leg open to reveal the bone sticking out of the skin, and then snaps it back in place and screams bloody hell. God even the part when he gets hit on the back multiple times by the paddle and then eventually in the head. To me, even though Bacon had a few moments of snappage earlier on, that movie took a hard left-turn at the breaking-of-the-leg scene. Anyone else think so?

Vic was a close-minded ass. It wasn't that Allen made mistakes that Vic was trying to correct. There was nothing wrong with Allens fish trap. He was scared out of his wits hanging off the side of a mountain all alone. He nearly fell off a bridge 100 or so feet high when a board rotted out beneath his foot and snapped. Where was Vic's words of encouragement? He berated Allen for not getting the tent poles and lieing (OK, the lieing was bad, but where was the comforting when the kid nearly died?). He left Allen hanging there, off the mountain, with not so much as one word of encouragement, just a "you can do it if you want now goodbye." He was pissed because Allen didn't catch fish "his way" but with an improvised trap.

Vic was a grade-a ass and wouldn't ever be allowed to take anybody's kids on a trek through the country after the first time it was reported that he did these actions. He endangered the kids, plain and simple.

ohh man ... that leg-breaking was a monster. It was a hard left turn because it was so visually disturbing. I agree with bikebryan that it wasn't an unpredictable left turn, but it certainly was harsh because at no other point in the film was there blood and a genuine fear of death (the lightning storm wasn't that bad).

great movie.

I don't mean to impose, but I am the ocean.

i felt a bit sorry for vic by then. but nonetheless, what did you think all the graphic bone crunching was s'posed to do?

Ain't we a pair, Mr. Raggedy Man?

Now that I think about this movie more I'd have called Alan's Father and told him to come pick his pussy child up and take him home w/ a dress on and then finished the trip w/ the other guys. Also...would have punched Alans Pops right in the eye sockets for putting his waste in my company...what nerve. If we all left it up to poor little Alan the entire trip would have been a waste. I'm glad Vic left him on the cliff. Alan was a constant pain in the ass....ughghghghg, getting irritated just thinking about that little Mary.
