Agreed, the fish scenes displayed Vic's stubbornness. Alan should have been commended for his innovation, as implausible as his fish trap was.
As for the rock climbing incident, I take Vic's side.
I did a lot of Outward Bound expeditions as a kid in the 80s. I was a leader in the 90s. I have been on both sides of the Alan/Vic thing. The reason they go on these trips is to instill confidence and a sense of accomplishment in the kids. When kids 'wuss out', its the leaders job to light a fire under them. That's all Vic was doing.
When Alan was 'stranded' hanging, he was in no danger. Vic merely wanted him to try to do it himself.
Anyhow, its an interesting film. The characters have rough edges, they have virtues and weaknesses. Vic is seen as the bad guy, but the irony was that he did instill confidence in Alan when all was said and done. So, he did his job.
