Gekko dropping the plate through a space in the table - metaphor?

Gekko dropping the plate through a space in the table seems like an unnecessary moment of comic relief. But later there's the speech where Gekko talks about how money is "transferred from one perception to another, like magic." Then he tells Bud about the painting and how "the illusion has become real."

Plus! Immediately after the table scene Gekko says, "Look, I got no illusions about winning a popularity contest with any of you."

Makes me wonder if the table scene was a metaphor for illusions.

Possibly....

although personally I believe it wasn't that deep a scene. I have always though it was just a jab at the silly fashions especially when expensive stuff is involved. A coffee table that can't properly be used as a coffee table is indeed crazy :)

@CoffeeRules Yeah, you're right, I was probably in one of my insomnia spells when I posted that. At the time it would've felt like an epiphany, man.

God, the 80s was awful. Bad fashion, bad music - even the furniture sucked ass.

I agree, it was just a jab at the ridiculous crap Bud had in his apartment. I mean, WTH was up with the Star Wars paintings?

It was just an accident. It highlighted how pretentious they were.
