It IS so great of a film! On all levels; direction, cinematography, casting, performances, and one of my all time fav musical scores. I loved it in 87 & I STILL love it just as much now as then!

One of my favorite films too. It really is a classic.

Are you guys for real, this movie was a total cheeseball flick I can't believe it's an 8.0. Probably the worst gangster film I've ever seen.

Seriously what do you all love about it?

And his masterpiece? Really? I take it you haven't seen either scarface or Carllitos way.

reply

I wouldnt say it's his best but the movie overall is entertaining and a joy to watch which is essentially what movies are for. It also had an amazing cast, looked gorgeous and a rousing musical score. I know snobs who only watch Bergman, Ozu and the like and piss on movies like The Untouchables but everyone seems to forget that movies were made to provide escapism and thrills for an audience and this is what The Untouchables achieves.

Well' when you take into account that you mention Scarface and carlito's way' One major difference is that in The Untouchables' you are on the side of the good guys' they are clearly shown as the the protagonist' while the gansters and corrupted police officals are shown as the Antagonists. So in this way' it isnt really a ganster film but since they havnt been many movies about anti-corrupt police squads' then there isnt really a genre you can place it in' so its simply classed as a ganster film. In Scarface and Carlito's way' you are on the side of the gansters' theres is the only side you are given and they have some redeaming features which place them as the anti-hero you root for. while in Scarface' tony's first meeting with the law when they ask how he got his scar ect' casts the law as harsh and brutal and so you slowly begin to see things from tonys point of view' while the same is pretty much for carlito' plus the fact that he is trying to go straight. The One and only problem i have with Carlitos way' is the fact that they begin the film with what carlito obviously dying' i just thought it destroyed any tension that the film built up. A shame I thought as it was otherwise a great movie. But The Untouchables is a unique movie' with a great cast' super cinematograpy and rousing score' it will always hold a place as one of my top five movies of all time.

I love this film.

I love this movie a ton. I never get all the hate on this board.

This would have been amazing if it was more of a real serious crime film, rather than a shoot-'em-up film. But I can't complain, I still like it.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Loved it, especially the last line:

Reporter: They say they're going to repeal Prohibition. What will you do then?
Ness: I think I'll have a drink.
