It's honestly hard to watch. Total Cheeseball would be the best description of this movie I could think of. How could this even be compared to classics like The Godfather or Goodfellas?
I'm sure this was a great movie 25 years ago, but it doesn't hold up well. I honestly can't believe it's rated 8.0 by IMDB...
You're right. It has its moments early on, but gets really cheesy later.
I wonder if Coppola was careful to do things to keep his films from ever later looking or sounding dated?

I saw it when it came out and liked it a lot.
I think a key way to think about it is: its not really a gangster movie. Its a Western and scaled "bigger than life." For fun.
That's probably a fair assessment. I'm not a big fan of Westerns though.
