The baseball scene

Why did Capone kill that guy with the baseball bat. I don't understand.

reply

Because he was out of his mind, and probably also as a demonstration of power. Perhaps he wanted to show that "I can do whatever I *beep* want, and I dare you to try and stop me!"

The guy that Capone whacked with the baseball bat was the guy who let the Untouchables raid the liquor storage in the post office - the guy Connery clubbed. It was Capone's way of saying if you punk out on the job, you're going to die anyway.

Life's not fair. There's your lesson for the day.

I always thought it was because the guy kept repeating the same thing Capone was saying during that meeting, and it was pissing him off. I swore Capone was getting more and more aggravated every time the guy opened his mouth to repeat what he just said in almost a mocking tone. Maybe it was because I was a kid when watching that movie, and didn't pay attention to what happened before that.

I always felt that Capone should have gotten his legs more into that swing. You get much more power and distance that way, as opposed to swinging just with the arms.

I am the batting coach for the Houston Astros, so I know of what I speak.

I saw blood but very little brain tissue. He really needed to get his lower body involved in the swing in order to produce maximum carnage.

I shall remember that at my next sales meeting.

reply

No sense in me repeating someone else but what JDUNNEROCKS said in his post says it best.

reply

It is my understanding that the guy who was murdered by Capone was overseeing the operation in the Post Office when Ness and his team busted the liquor operation. Similar to Roman times, when a soldier failed at his duty, he would be put to death. Capone put his ass to death with a baseball bat.

I can't help but wonder how many here would've survived in Capones gang....?
He could not have been more clear as to why he did this - he took great pains to explain himself for G_ds sake. "Team work and Team Players". Just like any top dog in a company, this is what he expected from his people. Loyalty and and eye always on improving the companies profits for the good of the company. In fact, when Al asks what draws his admiration someone yells out 'babes' (or dames or maybe girls - don't remember exactly so I guess I get the Louie Ville myself) and Al corrects them:"Team" and the assembled guests respond in unison "teamwork". Al is obviously pleased that they now 'get it'. He then points out that some are out for themselves though. And this is when he then reaches for the bat and splatters the renegades brains all over the table and guests. I always get a kick out of the reaction - several are wiping blood and brain matter from their faces and Tux's, looking away so as not to puke up the dinner they just ate. The one poor guy,to the victims right, has nowhere to look except directly at Als gut. The scene ends there and cuts away to action elsewhere but, I can't help but try to imagine how that scene would've played out. Would big Al have excused himself at that point and headed for private quarters leaving the remaining guests to figure for themselves as what to do next ? Or, maybe Al had a separate room already set up so he could invite them to follow him to cleaner seating ? And if Al remained with them, who spoke first and what was the uncomfortable silence breaker ?
"Did ya hear the one about..." or 'Two nuns and a prostitute get on a bus...".
I would have looked for ANY excuse (which would not leave Al doubting my loyalty) to get the hell out of there asap and headed anywhere that I would be assured to have a double shot of whiskey in hand immediately, if not sooner.

gee, I had no idea.

From the IMDB trivia section:
The scene where Al Capone (Robert De Niro) suddenly pulls out a baseball bat at a dinner party and beats to death one of his men is based on a true incident that happened on May 7, 1929. Two of Capone's most feared hitmen, Albert Anselmi and John Scalise, had hatched a plot to kill Capone and take over his gang. Capone got wind of it and invited all his associates to a dinner party, including Anselmi and Scalise. In the middle of the party, Capone pulled out a baseball bat and battered both men to death, then shot them both in the head.

reply

Why did he shoot them if they were already dead from the baseball batting? Wouldn't this have been during the Depression when bullets would have been fairly expensive? Could the bat still have been used during ball games, or at least practice? I just hate to see waste anywhere.

reply

He's Al Capone, he's a wealthy mobster, and he could do whatever the heck he wants - especially involving bullets which he most likely smuggled the goods himself. Bullets were no problem to him, its part of his illegal merchandise, and probably got them for free.

As for that baseball bat... he'll probably use it again in another dinner party meeting...or have it cleaned up and wrap it up as a gift for a corrupt police commissioner's son.

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

reply

The guy he killed was a traitor and used a bat instead of a gun because he wanted him to suffer.

the guy was a gangster, an egomaniac. He had half the city in his pocket - even at the end he is laughing and joking because he thinks he can get away with it by bribing the jury - in effect he thought he was "untouchable".

In terms of plot, the person he killed was a traitor / snitch. In terms of character, the scene helped vilify Capone so that the viewer can get behind Costner and the others.

In real life Capone & others beat the gunmen who carried out the St Valentine's Day massacre because they did not kill George "Bugs" Moran, their main target.

A dentist who resembled Moran visited the garage & was mistaken for Moran by the gunmen.
