I don't know about anyone else, but every time I see Malone getting mowed down with machine gun fire sends chills down my back. It's hard for me to watch this (I generally skip it). Has anyone else felt the same way about this? The famous elevator scene with the accountant and the thug is another tough one to view too. I've seen plenty of violent movies, but this one is always a tough one for me.
I'm afraid I completely disagree. I think they are FAR many more scenes in cinema history that are way more chilling than Malone's. I actually thought that scene was ridiculous.
Remember, there might be some MOMENTARY DISCOMFORT.
The OP needs to see The Public Enemy and Saving Private Ryan. TBH, Malone's wasn't even the most chilling death in the movie, in my opinion. The double homicide in the elevator left an image on me.
'You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?' 'Yeah, he told me you're gay.' *BANG!*
Capone beating the guy with the baseball bat was the most gruesome for me. The sound of the bat hitting the guy's head made me cringe, yet I absolutely love it.
Malone getting shot and crawling on the floor, a bloody mess, was brutal, but what killed the seriousness of it all, was his final words to Costner; it just felt too comedic. It wasn't necessarily what he said, but the way it happened was a little laughable. Everything before his last breath wasn't a pleasant thing to watch, but I can't say it's the most chilling death scene I've ever seen. A little too overdramatic as he died in Costner's arms, I just couldn't take it seriously.
Do you know how HARD it is for a bloody black man to get a cab on Thanksgiving?
I think the OP is referring to that rare moment of recognition in Malone's face that he's been outclassed; that normally he's the one who takes a gun to a knife fight, only now he's taken a gun to a machine gun fight. As critic Pauline Kael wrote, it sends a shiver down you, you feel Connery's lifeblood go chill, or something.
Another similar scene is in Speed, when the buddy cop (Jeff Daniels) enters a booby trapped building and triggers a wire - there's that rare moment of recognition ... oh sh*t...
I feel exactly the same way. I am actually watching the movie right now and when I turned it on my first thought was damn I hate that scene when Malone dies and I actually just changed the channel for a few minutes when the infamous elevator scene came on.
