Underwear Question

From the trivia section:

Robert De Niro insisted on wearing the same style of silk underwear that Al Capone wore, even though it would never be seen on camera. The producers, knowing DeNiro's reputation as a Method actor, gave in.

So my question: in what sense did they give in? It's not as if the producers have to okay the actor's choice of underwear!

Is it about money? On a $20M budget, I can't believe that some silk underwear would have been a relevant factor.

It should be against the law to use 'LOL'; unless you really did LOL!

We know those uptight budget people are going to try and account for EVERYTHING, right down to the actor's underwear. And certainly if DeNiro wants to wear Capone's underwear - at those prices - if they're going to front the money for it then all the better. I don't think we're talking about a large AMOUNT of money, but there is a principle involved. The fact that this tidbit is something we're talking about shows that it must have been a pretty public point of contention by some exasperated producer.
