So let me get this straight...

this movie - featuring Robert Deniro as Robert Deniro playing Al Capone in a glorified cameo. Another mailed in performance from Kevin Costner. A hammy over the top performance from Sean Connery. The worst more inappropriate soundtrack/score I've ever heard in a movie, and guys being riddled with bullets but not instantly dying is considered a classic... yet there are tons of people who still claim Boardwalk Empire wasn't a great show?

waited years to finally watch this and man, what a gross disappointment. I don't even understand how this was loved at the time it came out.

I loved it when it came out and I still enjoy it - but I have to agree the score has not aged well.

reply

I have to disagree about the score, it's one of my favorites.

All pretty much true, except.....in 'real' life, people often survive after being 'riddled' with bullets, at least for a time. In fact I'd say the opposite - most movies unrealistically show someone being shot once and dropping dead.

One Bullet Can Kill, but Sometimes 20 Don’t, Survivors Show

A man in North Carolina was shot roughly 20 times in 1995 and lived to tell about it. The rapper 50 Cent was shot nine times in 2000 and has since released three albums. And in 2006, Joseph Guzman survived 19 gunshot wounds during the 50-shot fusillade by police detectives that killed Sean Bell.

While surviving numerous gunshots could be a miraculous feat, doctors who have treated gunshot victims say that being shot is not automatically a death sentence.

When major organs — the heart and brain especially — and blood vessels are avoided, the chances of survival are good, they said. The catch, of course, is that there is no science to preventing a bullet from hitting a vital part of the body.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Disagree. I think the actors knew exactly what type of movie they were doing and their performances signified this. OTT doesn't even come close to what Connery did. He actually had moments of subtlety and character growth. Plus, he was playing a grizzled, hard-nosed, take-no-prisoners cop who had nothing to lose. The performance perfectly fit. And I never agreed with the disdain for Costner's performance. I thought he was quite good playing an idealistic, moralistic crusader. I think people wanted someone with snarky one-liners or some kind of action hero. Ness had good character growth as well. DeNiro made the most out of his limited screen time, and I loved the supporting characters played by Garcia, Smith, Bradford, Kehoe, Drago, and Clarkson. This is a thoroughly entertaining film.
