ive been watching this movie since i was a kid and i always thought it was funny, but now watching it as an adult i never realized how interesting the cinematography and directing was. and so was the music! its really kind of a trippy movie. if danny devito was the one who came up with all that, he deserves way more credit as an artist!
sharewell DeVito got Barry Sonnenfeld as the cinematographer most of the credit belongs to him, check out "Raising Arizona" that was released the same year also with Sonnenfeld & u'll see both movies are kinda similar visually.
shareDeVito is sadly under-appreciated both as an actor and director. His directing skills particularly, deserve A LOT more credit. I've seen several of the films he's directed, i.e., Throw Momma from The Train, Hoffa, Matilda, Death To Smoochy, Duplex; and I can't help but be annoyed at how some (if not all) of these were panned. The guy seriously made some quality work. Sure, in something like Hoffa (solid work), you could tell he tried a little too hard, but by the time he made a wonderful film to look at -- Death To Smoochy -- to me he was undoubtedly an excellent film-maker. Though I've been greatly impressed with his talent long before Death To Smoochy. But yeah, it's no surprise you found the cinematography great; it's always been exquisite in DeVito's films. I suppose people just don't "get" his work.

Barry sonnenfeld has a very interesting "in your face" visual style that seems to gel well with DeVito's style. it can be seen in many of sonnenfelds most famous films he would later make when he became a director, like the Addams family movies and the Men in Black movies. you can tell right away its that similar almost cartoony style that hes made his own.
Realism, Remakes and Unnecessary Sequels are ruining movies!
