(spoiler) Why didn't the door trap fall when Momma hung her shawl?

With the basement door trap set for Mama...why didn't it fall when Momma pounded on it, but it did when Larry (Billy Crystal) did?

The same reason the Road Runner can go through the painted hole on the side of a cliff and Wyl E' Coyote splats against it when he tries lol.

It was just another example of how f-ed up Larry's luck was. I mean the poor guy was catching hell from all fronts throughout the movie.
