Two things I didn't see clearly

When Owen is returning from bowling and the police are at his house, he doesn't want to let them in, but then he sees something at the bottom of the door that changes his mind. What is it?

There's also a point when Larry's attempting to leave, but he hears sirens and sees the police right outside. What does he see when he looks out the window? Were the police arresting one of the neighbors for a completely unrelated crime?

Being inconsistent is better than being consistently bad.

1) before owen left for the bowling alley, he put a piece of thread in the door lock/jamb so he'd know if larry was gone or not when he returned home from bowling.

2) larry's just imagining/hallucinating that stuff due to the situation owen got him into.

"He must've thought it was white boy day. It ain't white boy day, is it?"

Exactly.

1.) Owen saw a string on the porch. Before he left to go bowling, he had placed a string in the doorjamb. He closed the door on the string, and presumably, when Larry killed Mrs. Lift, he would leave by that door, so that when the door opened, the string would fall down, and if the string was no longer in the door, that would be the signal.

2. I agree, that was just Larry himself hallucinating, due to the stress of the situation Owen had put him in.

Or a coincidence.
