Did Owen actually think he killed Margaret?

Or was he just lying to Larry? That's never been clear to me. I realize that she DID fall off the boat accidentally and survived but did Owen think that he pushed her off himself, or actually did push her off?

He pushed her and thought she was dead. Margaret was reaching for her earring and thought she had fallen overboard.

She fell off before he could push her.

Or he pushed her and she thought she'd fallen off.

I think the former as it's more innocent, which is more in line with the tone of the film.

I think Owen did believe that she fell off of the ship.

I thought she said she fell off the boat. Owen was trying to convince Larry he did his part of the deal.

She fell before Owen could reach her, and Owen knows it. When they meet after, Larry says "You killed my wife" and Owen replies "No I didn't... Yes I did."
