Why did Bateman play Todd, and not Scott?

I initially assumed the original screenplay draft was about Scott himself, but then when Michael j Fox did not want to reprise his role, the producers had the script revised to be about Scott’s cousin…

But if the producers ended up re-casting Stiles and coach Finstock (with different actors) anyway, then why didn’t they just keep the story about Scott - and have Jason Bateman play Scott?

Great point. The script was obviously written for Scott.

Because they wouldn't have been able to recreate the first movie with different faces and a different sport.

Seriously, they made absolutely no effort with this story. They just did everything exactly the same as the first except that it was so poorly done and there was nothing funny about it.
