Shoop at the strip bar?

I never could figure this scene out.

I know the scene right before, Shoop says something like, "We need a woman of culture and intellect" then, cut to a cheese-ball woman screaming, "Shake those buns!" I get the joke, but it still doesn't explain why he's at the bar. Is he trying to meet woman? And if he were, why would he go after those old, dumpy women?

I also don't get the random line, "Hi, I'm with 'Playgirl' magazine..."

Anyone have any thoughts to shed some light?

His way of trying to pick up women, in an attempt to forget about Kirstie Alley's character.

Yes it was his way of trying to forget Kristie Alley's character. It was still funny though and Carl Reiner did a fantastic job on this film!

The two women in that scene were extremely miscast. Shoop would never go for a couple of older unattractive women. Also, at the end of the scene it shows Larry go over to the women, and Shoop acts jealous of him as if he's hooking up with a couple of young babes. It's a good scene on paper, but the two women that they chose for it basically ruined it.

I can't help shed any light on this scene either just that I agree 100%. The only reason to put this scene in the movie is so we can find out why Larry is sleeping all the time of course But that does not explain why Mr. Shoop is in a strip bar on Ladies night telling women he works for Playgirl magazine that is just out of place in this film. I hope to find an answer one day too like perhaps this scene was extended and cut down for time sake or something and perhaps the longer cut would answer our questions. anyone else know?

Back in the '80s clubs having male dancers like the Chippendales one night a week was very popular. And their advertisements in local newspapers said something about gentlemen being welcome after 1100pm. I assume the idea was that men would go there to be in a club packed with women. Back then I worked part-time at a movie theater snack bar. Frequently attractive women who came to the theater asked to speak with their friend, the assistant manager, a short perverted loser. I heard he met a lot of those ladies at one of the clubs on male dancer nights.

That is exactly it. Me and some friends pulled the Shoop in 1986 - before this movie. We went to the strip club looking for the women who got all horned up by the male strippers and started hitting on them.

Didn't work out too well, because the women were in their 30s and 40s, and we were 21 and didn't have any game.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
