They're remaking THIS instead of Watchmen?!

So, apparently Paramount decided they would rather spend their money on a remake of a largely forgotten eighties teen flick rather than taking a chance on what could have potentially been the greatest comic book movie ever made.

I can guarantee you that the Summer School remake is going to suck, get panned and disapear as quickly as it appeared whereas Watchmen could have been an instant classic.

But NOOO!!! Rather than bankroll a movie that had a strong buzz surrounding it they decided to blow money on yet another vapid remake.

Congratulations Paramount, you really picked a winner!

This is horrible news, i was waiting for sooooooooooo loooooooooong for the freaking watchmen movie, i waited when they said gilliam was gonna do it, then waited some more when aronofsky was attached, then greenglass, that seemed like it was going ok, but then it gets cancelled, and this gets the green light?

I mean i really liked the original summer school, and i know, this remake is gonna suck, theres probably gonna be some pothead kids instead of the chainsaw massacre guys, just stupid, recycled, seen this a thousand times, mtv crap.

I hope somebody takes on watchmen soon.

Do or do not there is no try

I'm disapointed and angry that Watchmen was dropped in favour of this crap.

However, this might mean that someone may try to do it as a mini-series on HBO. While I'm sure the movie that Paul Greengrass was going to make was going to be amazing the only way they're going to do this classic piece of literature any justice is by doing it as a 12 part mini-series.

We'll have to wait and see. Watchmen is going to make it to either the silver or small screen one day. There's too much of a demand for them not to.

reply

I guess that answers that question then.

Nobody watches the watchmen....

Sad, but easy cash though low budget, dumb humor, definitely going to the bank with summer school.

reply

Like I said, I hope the Summer School remake fails miserably and once Watchmen is finally made it makes truckloads of money, is universally adored, wins lots of awards and becomes an instant classic.

I just want to see the execs at Paramount look like a bunch of FOOLS because of this asinine decision.

reply

Ummm....are you guys so sure they're remaking this?

There's a movie called Summer School coming out in '06, but it's not the same plot. At all.

reply

Hmmm...they all went silent.

reply

Yes, all the '06 Summer School has in common with the '87 version is the title. Have you read the plot summary for the new version?! It sounds LAME!

For me it's the principle. They would rather sink money into a crappy teen movie rather than take a chance on what could have been the greatest comic book ever made and I think that SUCKS.

Is what I'm saying going to make any difference? Probably not. Let's face it; movie execs are driven by making a profit and idiotic remakes are where the money is. While it could be argued that a Watchmen movie would be profitable, let's face it (Despite Time citing it as one of the 100 greatest pieces of fiction of the last 100 years) it's mostly a cult phenomenom and the audience for the movie would probably be very limited.

And that's most likely why Paramount decided to drop it. It's unfortunate but that's how a business that bottom line driven works. They would rather go with mindless entertainment that'll make a quick buck vs. a film that would appeal to a limited audience but, as I said, could have the potential to be a crossover hit with mainstream audiences.

Like I said; it'll be interesting to see how Watchmen does once it's finally made. As I've also stated before if it's a success then Paramount is probably going to feel pretty foolish for dropping it. Especially if Summer School '06 tanks like I'm predicting it's going to.

Yeah, great... the world really needs yet another lameass comic book movie.

Along with the special edition DVD release commemorating the twentieth anniversary of Summer School, many of the original cast were present for a reunion party. During an audience Q&A, Dean Cameron suggested that he would be open to a sequel or possibly even a remake of the original. When asked who he would cast as Chainsaw, he suggested Shia LaBeouf or Zach Braff. In early 2012, Adam Sandler's production company Happy Madison Productions signed on for the remake.

I really hope they aren't remaking this, it is great the way it is, besides it was an 80's movie, remaking an 80's movie would be dumb.
