Why was Shoop at the strip club?

What was Shoop doing at the strip club anyway? He obviously didn't know Larry was working there and although his 'I'm with Playgirl magazine' sounded made up on the spot, it presents my only guess. If he does work for Playgirl mag, it is completely ridiculous as it seems a weak excuse to get him into the club to discover that Larry was working there.

Back Off this is ladies night!

His discovery was an accident. If you recall, he told Wondermutt that they needed a woman with intellect and culture...which, of course, leads to him being in a strip club on Ladies' Night. His Playgirl magazine bit was a pick-up line. And no, it doesn't work in real life, either...

"It's always funny until someone gets hurt...
And then it's just hilarious!"

It was a bit of a tenuous reason for him to discover Larry though. But in a film like that you suspend disbelief and just go with it. I never thought to question it before.

He was at the strip club to pick up horny drunk women.
The Playgirl thing was just a line.
His girlfriend went to Hawaii without him and Robin was still with Gills.

In regards to moderndayzero the quote goes like this..."Back off HAIRBAG! This is ladies night."

She calls him "Handbag," implying that he's gay.

I've never questioned the reason as to why he was there. It's a humerous moment from him saying to Mutt he needed a women of culture to cutting to a strip club - you just go with the comedy of it. Obviously for the plot he needed to find his pupil and deal with that issue too.

Never question a good screwball comedy too much! It's a great film.

"I've got socks...two of them"

Right...I was just correcting the language, since "hairbag" doesn't quite make sense. ;)

You read my mind completely. I just saw this movie again tonight; probably seen it a ton of times. Tonight was the first time I thought to question why he was there, and ironically enough I stumble onto this blog. Anyway, I don't have any reasons why he was there other than to pick up chics. BUT, if that's the case, then why would he (a better than average looking guy) drop that kind of line on a chic like that? And wasn't he in a suit/sports jacket? I don't remember exactly, but it seemed like he was overdressed for the character, another reason to believe he was just scouting for women. Sure, I may be overthinking this but there was a reason they dressed him up that way in the movie. Anyway, great movie...one of those where you can start watching from any point and it's good. Definitely on my top 80's list!

That's funny. I just rewatched this movie and came on here to address this very issue. Shoop was way out of those women's league, so it didn't make sense for him to be hitting on them.

Haha, that part is hilarious! I never really thought about why he was there. Kinda strange how he happened to go to the same club Larry worked at. Now why would he go to a guys strip club though to pick up women, that seems a little weird, just go to a normal bar.

I like the blonde lady coming up to Larry, "you were fabulous!! This is just between you and me"! haha!!

Larry looked like he was about 34. What was he doing in a high school summer school? Maybe he was also a narc.

I think Shoop was looking for woman. However, I think he could have gone to a regular bar. The continuity with him meeting Larry seems off-base, because Shoop obviously did not know that Larry worked there. It sort of made Shoop look gay, when we wasn't because we know that he was attracted to woman. However, Ms. Bishop was there not only as a good supporter and friend as the film progresses, she kept Freddy's morals in check about the seriousness of Pam being a "Maid" for him.

I think the writers needed some way for Shoop to meet Larry outside of school and the strip club seemed like the best they could do. Larry could have lied about his age, worked in a bar, with Shoop there to meet woman, and perhaps the scene could have worked better.

It was a normal, guys' strip club. It just happened to be 'ladies night,' as that grave-voiced lady said. My local strip joint was mainly for hetero men, but they also had 'ladies night' or 'gays night' a couple times a year.

Back in the '80s clubs having male dancers like the Chippendales one night a week was very popular. And their advertisements in local newspapers said something about gentlemen being welcome after 1100pm. I assume the idea was that men would go there to be in a club packed with women. Back then I worked part-time at a movie theater snack bar. Frequently attractive women who came to the theater asked to speak with their friend, the assistant manager, a short perverted loser. I heard he met a lot of those ladies at one of the clubs on male dancer nights.

There is no good reason except to try and slip it by the audience.
