shareThis movie got me into Dreyfuss way back when it was released in 87. Its one of my faves of all time. Dreyfuss and Estevez worked so well together. The oneliners, the pranks etc. It was also beleivable. There was nothing far fetched about it. An innocent movie that is very pleasing. Even the fight scenes were good.

I liked this movie a lot. i saw it on a tv channel like 2 months ago
shareAnother good thing about Stakeout is that the gags, pranks and the action scenes were filmed in April- June 1987, about 2 years before directors began using a new thing called CGI. Stakeout was just downright hilarious and the action scenes balance it out exceptionally well for 1987 and even for 26 years later (this film still holds up). When Stakeout was being filmed Richard Dreyfuss had a lot to prove because of his drug use in the mid to late 70's through the early 80's. ( Down and Out In Beverly Hills (86), Stand By Me (86), The Buddy System (84) etc). Luckily, he proved himself to leading man status by the time of Once Around (90). If you haven't checked it out, if you can find a copy at amazon or somewhere watch the film (Whose Life Is It Anyway? (81)). Dreyfuss was superb and should have won the Oscar for Best Actor in this 1981 film. Very underrated indeed. Estevez also was a hot item at the time with (The Outsiders (83), The Breakfast Club (85) and although a lot of people dismissed it, Wisdom (86) (Demi Moore was HOT!!). It is a shame that Hollywood can't make a film today without throwing so much CGI at you or over-the top violence and just tell a simple story like Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby (04) for example). God I miss the 80's- better music, better movies, better television choices! But like any decade, the 80's sure did have their fair share of tragedies (Challenger, Chernobyl, AIDS etc)
shareDuring the love scene in the movie, a song was sung by a female. This has been driving me nuts! I thought this was a great movie, but I can't figure out who sang that song, much less what the title was (?)
It sounds a lot like Patti Austin or Roberta Flack, but I have never been able to find it anywhere! I think it is called "This Night was Made for ONe Thing Only" and I am trying to find it! Please help if you can. Thanks! Joe
Hi,
You are right about the song title. The version played in the movie was sung by Randy Crawford.

watched and watched again with the same peasure every single time for the last 16 years, each time I wish I was deyfuss under the bed with gloria estephan in my ears...
Tonight Madeleine stove is on TV in Blink... This one is good too especialy if you consider the vilain has become a nice cop!!!!!!
...and I wish I were Madeleine Stowe, in bed with RD!
Oh boy! Richard D is GORGEOUS!! I love him in that movie. I love him in all his movies (OK, most) but he's especially lovely in this.
He's vulnerable, tough when he needs to be, cute, funny, and so handsome. <sigh>
He even gets to look terrible, with all that garbage all over him! What a guy.
Mind you, if that's how he eats breakfast in real life, I'm less impressed.....
dont blame him, blame the parents..its an old family custom
my all time fav bit is where Chris (or Bill) is in the maket getting junk food and the girl serving him says really sarcastically "eating in between meals?" and screws her face up, then dreyfuss screws up his face in a similar manner and says in an equally sarcastic voice the same thing, the look on the girls face after that is priceless!!
Yeah, that's true! It is pretty gross, though!
I watched Stakeout again last night, and you're right, that bit is pretty funny - but not one of my favourite bits.
I love the bit when Chris goes back to his appartment to find his wife has cleaned the place out. Bitch. He's so vulnerable and cute. I love that when Bill calls him, he knows exactly what he's doing
"Have you broken the seal yet?"
"Nope".
So touching.
I also love the bits when they're looking at the house. You can see his gorgeous eyes so clearly...
I love the part where he (Dreyfuss) calls up Maria while she's cooking some steak. And, he sees--through the telescope--that it's starting to burn.
CHRIS: "The steak! The steak! Your steak is burning!!!"
As he watches her extinguish the flames, he suddenly realizes what she's gonna ask, next.
CHRIS (muttering to himself): "How did you know it was burning?"
MARIA: "How did you know it was burning?"
CHRIS (putting receiver to ear): "What?"
MARIA: "I said, 'How did you know my steak was burning?' "
CHRIS: "I...uhm...I heard the...uhm...sizzling in the background!"
He then cradles the receiver against his chest as he laughs at the lameness of that excuse.
you gotta sell the sizzle!
His name...was Julio Iglesias!
I totally agree. The movie is awesome! The second one was ok. But now with the whole Rosie crap that's going on. I just can barley watch the second.
But "STAKEOUT," Is easily one of the best action / comedies I've ever seen! It's a lot of fun!
I admit, this is one of the best movies out there. It got me into the lovely Madeleine Stowe. What a great actress. Its a shame a great film like this is followed by a terrible sequel.
I just watched it for my first time and I liked it but thought Madeleine Stowe was way too good looking for Dreyfuss. Still though funny movie
