The Pluto-Bark-joke for dummies
Since most youtubers don't get that joke - it's frustrating to watch people I used to think had at least average intelligence just stare blankly or shake their head a bit in confusion - I will break it down here.
No need to thank me, I have nothing better to do on a friday.
So, both words, 'Pluto' and 'Bark' are homonyms for other words. Both words mean multiple things (at least two).
Pluto is both Mickey Mouse's dog and a planet (yes, it's still a planet, despite what this tiny planet's hare-brained so-called 'scientists' have decreed - anyone thinking planets CARE about these definitions is bonkers).
Goofy is also a dog, but a sentient one, so I guess in Duckburg (how un-inclusive name, species-wise!), there are two kinds of animals - sentient ones and regular ones.
Bark is something dogs do (english onomatopoeia makes no sense, though, as in 'bow-wow' - yeah, THAT is what dogs 'say'.. sure! Might as well make it 'Howdy-ho' and it would make just as much sense), and it's something found on trees.
So this joke SIMPLY combines both meanings of both words into a joke.
Someone knows which planet (Pluto, the planet) they are on, because they are feeling all the trees, and they recognize Pluto (the dog) from the bark (which is what Pluto, as a dog, would recognizably do, but also, is the usual 'skin' of trees, so feeling the trees would lead him to know something about the bark (tree skin), but the joke transmogrifies this meaning into a dog bark, and since Pluto is a dog, Pluto's (the dog) bark (the sound) will make them realize they are on Pluto (the planet) because its trees have a recognizable bark (the tree skin).
Wow, it looks complicated when explained, but the joke is extremely silly, relying both on the double-meaning of Pluto (dog and the planet) and the double-meaning of bark (dog sound and tree skin).
So feeling around the trees, he recognizes the bark, so he realizes they are on Pluto.
It's actually an almost impossible thing to happen realistically, without it being a joke, because the 'bark' changes from 'tree skin' into 'dog sound' instantly, and the meaning of 'Pluto' fluctuates accordingly. If they are talking about the 'tree skin', then Pluto is the planet. If they are talking about the 'dog sound', then Pluto is Mickey's dog. They are basically using both meanings of both words simultaneously, which makes no sense (except as a joke).
This means, he knows what planet they are on by feeling all the trees, because trees have bark, and dogs bark, and Pluto is a dog, so they must be on the planet that has the same name.
Extremely silly, but it's weird that people just DO NOT GET IT, and I am sick and tired of watching 'youtube reactors' watch this movie and just not get it.
Someone even said first half of this movie has no jokes and is not funny, which is a really ridiculous insult to make - these modern people just don't GET the jokes.. to me, this movie is funny from beginning to end, although I do hate that super slow spaceship bit that goes on way too long - even for a joke.
In any case, great movie, but dang people are IGNORANT..
.. we live in sad times, when all these old, great, classic, super funny movie jokes have to be explained, because otherwise people just don't get it, because they're either too ignorant or too stupid or both.
It goes together with people shaking their heads in confusion when that spear hits the wall in 'Airplane!' (it's reference to the earlier scene with indians chasing them to emphazise how absolutely STUPID those early TV show and movie 'back projections' look, even the scale is deliberately all wrong).
BTW, why do so many of these 'supposedly intelligent' 'reactors' think there was green screen in the early or even late eighties? Green screen was not introduced until a bit later (not exactly sure, when), before that, there was BLUE screen, and in the earlier days, it was called 'Chroma Key'.
Don't quote me on it, but I am pretty sure in 1987, they would have used blue instead of green screen, but even then, these people think all effect-shots are somehow 'green screen', even when they are CLEARLY not (the back projection in Airplane! is a good example of just that; a back projection)
Many people don't even seem to realize that the slow-motion 'fire explosion' effect after the elevator supposedly falls down (something elevators never do, because they have SO many safety features - especially by shooting ONE cable? COME ON!) is actually REAL fire, not some 'CGI'-effect.
I don't know which bothers me more; people's stupidity or people's ignorance. If these youtuber dummies could be elevated to a 'medium intelligence level', I would gladly lose a finger to make it happen, without hesitation.
