I like this movie but when his dad comes in to yell at him about it, I totally agree! SUCH a waste of money?? Earrings!

Yeah but I don't think that was the point really of the money.
The money just made the whole burden about college bigger. It was an excuse for his dad to push him harder to pick a business college. I think blowing the money, made it feel like the tough decision would be ultimately easier.
I think a tough lesson like that is best learned while young. Now he doesn't have to suffer living with a princess-wife and keeping her "satisfied" for life. And that's a good lesson.
