The first blunder is never get involved in a land war in Asia. The second is never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line. The third is never go after a girl who is already in a relationship.

Well, Dustin Hoffman made that 'blunder' (the last one) at the end of the Graduate, and that sort of fit the movie.

He might have known that Amanda had broken up with Hardy, having seen him cheat on her with a young girl and get caught by Amanda twice and seeing her storm off. It was a safe bet she was single and perfect timing.
