Lettuce

Did one man die from eating lettuce with a slug in it???

reply

Yes. A slug crawls into a head of lettuce and after the lettuce is cut up, it is used in a salad. The man eats the salad and apparently all the pieces of the slug have become many, complete slugs. They eat their way out of the mans body.

reply

hiya

actually, (and this is from the Shaun Hutson novel, I haven't seen the film) the slugs are infected with parasitic worms, and even when the slug is cut up, the man is killed by the worms that eat their way out of his head

They're so slow. We could just walk right past em and we wouldn't even have to run.

reply

This is based on a novel?

I watched this as a kid, and then rewatched it as a college student. This movie is gross, and intensifies my fear of slugs.

reply

yup, British horror writer Shaun Hutson....he's credited on the IMDb page

Hutson also wrote a sequel called Breeding Ground

That part is the same in the movie...They take some of the "worms" to the scientist guy and he explains that they are parasites that live in slugs.

I read Breeding Ground. Undoubtedly one of the worst novels I have ever read.

I've also read Captives. It's worse because it's about twice as long.

I think I'll read Deadhead next.

It was also said in the movie about the parasites that were carried by the slugs, and that with a high dosage would result in what happened, so the man ate an entire slug. So I guess his wife stuck to a liquid dinner of alcohol.

...or perhaps they were pickled...IN HER STOMACH. (Actually, I was amazed how much like "Shivers" this scene was, though this movie is so much older.)

reply

No, even in the movie the scientist explains that the man contracted a parasite that's usually only found in slugs and that's how he died.

reply

Not only did he die from it, but it was the most ridiculous and exaggerated death scenes I've ever seen. I love it!

reply

Yesterday I watched this movie for the first time in probably 15 years and the only part I remembered was the lettuce.

Its such a disturbing image, but of course now, I laugh at how ridiculously awful and awesome this movie is.

Slugs is an incredibly cheesy viewing experience, but what else would you expect from the director of Pieces (1982).
