Inspired to visit

Roxanne has always been a favorite movie of mine. Has anyone ever been inspired to visit Nelson because they saw this film? Let me know if the town lived up to it's depiction in the film. I have a trip to Seattle scheduled next year with a side trip to Vancouver. I am wondering if I should take a few extra days and visit Nelson. Maybe look up and photograph as many of the movie locations that I can find.

Thanks

You can do some of that exploring via Google street view.

I did do that. Found a couple of the town locations. All of the interior scenes and Roxanne's house were filmed in Vancouver. I have the address for Roxanne's house but there is no street view for that location.

Cool! What town locations did you find? Has Roxanne's house changed much?

Roxanne's house is not in Nelson. It is in a suburb of Vancouver. I thought I had the address for it's location but that did not pan out. Here is a link to a recent picture of the house. It has been repainted since the film.

I will post some addresses shortly of some of the locations in Nelson that were in the movie.

Thanks

Update: The above link no longer works for a recent view of Roxanne's house. Google Street View does provide a good look at the current house.

Here are a couple of addresses for locations in Nelson I have found so far. Keep in mind two things if you are using Google Street View to look these up.

The film scenes were shot in August of 1986. I am posting this in September of 2013. Some of the buildings look different twenty-seven years later.

Most of these addresses I have been able to confirm with listed addresses. However Google Street View may not setup right in front of the actual building. It may be necessary to move up or down the street to get right in front of the building.

Fire Station
924 Ward Street
Nelson BC

You will notice some additions to the Fire Station, but it still looks much the same.

Dixie's Cafe
524 Vernon Street
Nelson BC

This is now called the "Jackson's Hole". In the movie the lower front was white. The current building has been restored to it's original stone veneer.

All Things Dead
342 Baker Street
Nelson BC

Building looks the same, it is just behind a tree and difficult to see.

279 Club
502 Vernon Street
Nelson BC

This is actually the town municipal building. If you navigate to the Ward Street side you can see the door that was used for the 279 Club. There is no club in the Building. The 279 interior scenes were actually shot in a real club in Vancouver named Richard's on Richards. The real club was in operation up until 2009. The building was torn down and new upscale condos have been built on the original location.

Thanks

I had never used Google Street View very much. As I am looking for filming locations in Nelson, I have been very impressed with the quality of the pictures as well as how many streets they have covered.

Here are some additional locations from the film I have identified:

Peter's (Porky's) House
715 Hall Street, Nelson, BC, Canada

This was the house that was used for the roof scene bewteen C.D. and the chubby kid Peter. If you move up Silica slightly and look back at the house, you can see the interesting roof design. Also on the corner across from this house is the tree that the fire department attempted to rescue Snowball from.

Doctor's Office
601 Baker Street, Nelson, BC, Canada

I believe this is the building used for the doctor's scene were C.D. wants his nose cut off. The offices are on the second floor. At the beginning of the scene if you look out the window, you can see this very prominent building down Baker street.

Prominent Building
490 Baker Street, Nelson, BC, Canada

This building is right in the middle of Baker street. I can't remember what the correct name is for the design feature on this building, the tower like corner. There are several buildings in Nelson with this architectural feature.

Otter Books
398 Baker Street, Nelson, BC, Canada

This is the book store that Roxanne sees Chris in while he is picking up a book for an embarassed Andy. The front of the building was also used for a street scene were Roxanne gets out of Dixie's car to talk to C.D.

Nelson Daily News
250 Baker Street, Nelson, BC, Canada

Next to this building was Bossy's barn were the fire department finally gets to prove themselves worthy.

Roxanne's House
1020 Sugar Mountain Way, Anmore, BC, Canada

And finally, I found the correct address for Roxanne's house. Unfortunately Google Street View puts you at the end of the road. It is necessary to come down about half way Sugar Mountain Way to get right in front of the house.

This was fun finding all of these locations.

Wow what a wonderful place!

Your shaw link no longer works, but I found the house on Sugar Mountain Way in the Anmore area of Greater Vancouver. There are newer houses at the top of that road, in the cul-de-sac, but if you just drive down from there, Roxanne's place is two houses down. Has a big hedge, but you can see it well from the uphill neighbour's driveway.

Thanks for pointing out this old link doesn't work anymore. Fortunately we can get a decent look at the house from Google Street View.

I live in Nelson and many of the buildings are still recognizable. When we first moved here from Vancouver in 1997, we lived 2 house away from the firehall. There are still a lot of tourists stopping to get pics of the hall!

reply

If I can make time during my trip next summer, I will be one of those tourists taking a photo of the Fire Hall as well. The town looks like a great place to live. Has that been your experience?

Thanks

Steve Martin on Johnny Carson on the funniest thing that happened to him during the filming. He had to take a leak and for some reason there were no port-a-potties on the set so he had to go to a local bar. Outside there was a line of Harley's and a string of bikers at the bar. He thought "Oh, *beep* but he walked past the line, still in makeup with the big nose, and they all looked but nobody said anything until the last guy, who looked up and said, "So,...why the long face?"
