Can he remember the family or not?

It's shown both ways.

I mean, we're SHOWN that he _CLEARLY_ remembers the family, he even swings the gun exactly as he learned to do for his kid, we're shown the 'family moments' and 'strong emotional reaction', he punches the TV screen or monitor, seemingly emotionally distraught..

..then he says he can't remember them?

What?

How can both be true??

Possibly. That might be true

I was under the impression that he misspoke. Whether intentional or mistake in the script I couldn't say. He definitely remembers his family but he is no longer able to feel the emotional connection he had to them and it frustrates him.
