The Old Man?

They never gave him a name? 

Was that what it said on his birth certificate? 

Am I to believe that his parents NAMED him that when he was born? 

Were the writers just THAT lazy? 

reply

I always thought that was strange too, the characters never refer to him by an actual name, just "the old man". I don't know why no one ever thought of a name to give him.

And he's in the second movie too, pretty sure he wasn't addressed by anything other than "old man" or "OCP president" there either.

True, he never was given a name. Even in the third one. While he wasn't in it, they said "Remember what they did to the old man?" I kind of like how they never give him a name. He's the face of a soulless corporation.

reply

Exactly. He doesn't need a name so he doesn't get one in any of the films.
I don't think it's lazy. The film isn't harmed for noone referring to this minor character by name.

And it works to make him much more of a corporate entity - like it doesn't even matter who the old man actually is, they're just the face of the soulless corporation. When "The Old Man" retires or dies, someone else steps in and they are then "The Old Man".

He is just OCP through and through.

Good post CapnDred!

One thing I love about The Old Man in both movies is he NEVER loses his cool. In the first one, he watches a low level executive get blasted to bits. Everyone else is running, screaming and hiding. He only sits in his chair and says "Dick, I'm very disappointed". At the end he gets taken hostage, gets a gun to his head, watches his former number 1 guy get shot and fall out of window to his death. He straightens his tie and merely says "Nice shooting son, what's your name?". in Robocop 2 during his speech, a 20 foot robot goes crazy and starts shooting a ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE while Robocop is firing a 50 caliber weapon at it and The Old man shouts back at them "BEHAVE YOURSELVES!"

Isn't old man a slang phrase for penis. As are Morton, Johnson and Dick.

I'm not completely sure about Old man, can't find evidence from web now. But since everyone else in OCP are named after penises, it would make sense Old man means that too 
