Had he not shot the guy watching tv with Emil and he he not provoked Boddicker, he probably would still had been shot but maybe survived his injuries.
Telling Boddicker he is slime after hearing his partner is possibly dead and and Boddicker and his 5 remaining men are pointing shotguns at him is really really stupid.

That guy was going to shoot Murphy and possibly kill him right there. Both him and Emil would've taken Murphy out if Murphy didn't defend himself quickly.

Murphy knew his chances of making it out alive were almost none. It made no difference whether Murphy would've begged for his life or not said much and kept calm, Boddicker was most likely going to kill him.

Agreed. That's actually what made Boddicker's character so menacing in this film. You knew once Murphy was unarmed and at the mercy of Boddicker and his gang, it's all over for Murphy and there's no way out, no matter what methods Murphy could have tried. Boddicker and his gang being the cop killers they are, and Murphy and Lewis going into their turf was almost like watching two zebras walking into a den of lions. You really felt like Murphy was immediately doomed the second Emil smacks the gun out of his hand and the rest of the gang have their shotguns aimed at him. Then you even felt worse for him once Boddicker himself shows up and starts toying with Murphy.
The movie did an excellent job of really making an average human criminal into such a menacing bad-ass character.
Yep Boddicker is one of the greatest movie villains ever. But unlike, say Hans Gruber I really hate Boddicker.
I actually like Leon (but I always love Ray Wise) and Emil. The black guy and the asian I just hate. No racism, there. They're just not likeable in anyway.
We were just told in the opening newscast that Clarence was responsible for 3 cop killings and leaving another critically injured. So...yeah I highly doubt that not insulting Clarence was really gonna help Murphy's chances of survival.
If Murphy wanted to survive, he shouldn't have come out into the open by himself and then attempt to take prisoners when he knew the place was crawling with them thus would get cornered, he should've thus shot every thug he saw on sight (using the "they fired first" excuse).
Either that, or he should've just staked out the place, did some reconnoitring and waited for back up.
He was my C.O. in Nam. CIA listed him as MIA but the V.A. ID'd his M.O. and put out an APB.

Totally agreed. It was bad enough Murphy and Lewis split up to take on 6 gangsters with better firepower without backup in an unfamiliar setting.
