So Alex Murphy died

So the way I take it is that Alex Murphy died when he got shot up by Clarence and his gang. When Clarence finished off Murphy by shooting him in the head it was then that Murphy technically and literally died. All the attempts to save Murphy in the ER room were useless because Murphy was already dead. And so as such he was declared dead at the hospital but his brain and part of his digestive system was kept rather than put in the morgue for burial or some other form of disposal and after connecting his brain and digestive system to all the cybernetic machinery that would make him into Robocop they somehow brought it back. They somehow brought his brain back to life and what was Alex Murphy became Robocop. And although Murphy's brain still has some of Murphy's memories which are made apparent in flashbacks during certain parts of the movie it mostly just functions to fulfill the directives that Robocop was programmed to fulfill, (serve the public trust, protect the innocent, uphold the law). So, that being the case Robocop is just a cybernetic zombie who goes about doing what he's programmed to do.

Pretty much. Take a guy who was good at his job and turn him into a machine that does nothing but that job. Henry Ford would have loved the idea.

Basically more like a Futuristic Cybernetic Frankenstein Monster...

Well, that's one way to look at it, but according to Peter Weller it's a bit deeper than that. Here's a video where he shares some thoughts on the matter.

Yes he died.

And he's brought back to life by OCP, and slowly regains his humanity right up until the end when he says his name is Murphy (before he didn't even understand the question when Lewis asks for his name in the hallway).

Either that or the machine fooled itself into thinking it was Murphy.

Too creepy and counter to the Jesus metaphor of the movie (he literally walks on water when killing Clarence).

No, Murphy was no zombie. If he was, he wouldn't have acted so human by seeking out his true identity and by going after Dick Jones and Clarence and his crew.

I also don't think He was totally dead. His heart may've stopped but his brain was probably still functioning.

Whatever the case, Murphy is still alive and well. He just has an almost all mechanical body now.
