Smalls being Hi's father makes little sense to me. Why would he go after his son like that and potentially kill him? Why did Hi not recognize him if he were his dad, or make any mention of it?
Yeah, like they would recognize each other or in any way be cognizant of their relationship. It's not necessary that they do, only that we the audience believe they might be. But it's really not even important that they are father and son.
Smalls was there and real, simply representative of what HI could be if was really the outlaw he thinks he is. Which he isn't.
So it's significant that right after seeing the tattoo, he pulls that pin, saying goodbye to his outlaw side.
It's similarly relevant when Ed says "Give me that baby, you warthog from hell!", her being the woman that keeps HI in line.
