Best line ever. That's pretty sharp writing. That's ridiculously clever. That whole scene. The way all the characters play off each other. The deputy asks him three times, in a very realistic manner. Seems like they ad-lib. That's great directing.

Nothing seems to be ad-libber in Coen Brothers movies. I saw Jeff Bridges talking about The Big Lebowski, the scene in the limo, when, at the end, he's giving the finger (literally). He's all blustering and stammering, stopping in mid-sentence, and going off in another directing. He said in the interview how it was ALL in the script.
