Never saw this as a kid.
Watched this movie for the first time when I was in my early 20s and really didn't think much of it. Anyone else have the same experience?

shareYeah I didn't think much of it either. Saw where someone said don't recommend to someone who didn't see it in the theater when it came out in 1987. I was old enough to have done that, but I didn't see it until earlier this year. It was okay. So maybe I would have liked it more when it was out in 1987, but I really doubt it.
shareI'd have been 21 in 1987, but didn't actually see it until 2006 when I was 50.
I liked/like it.
Different folks, different strokes.
I just saw it for the first time, and I'm 20. I liked it well enough, I guess, but I think you're right; it's not the same as seeing it as a kid. It's not the type of movie I would rave about. I would say it's the most quotable movie I've ever seen, and I liked--but I didn't oh-my-goodness-just-LOVE--the characters. I think watching it for the first time as an adult, it's impossible to ignore the gaping plot holes. It's also easier to become distracted by how just plain goofy it is. And the plot is hardly original and there's nothing spectacular about the acting. I understand why people like it, and I understand why they don't.
shareI did see it as a kid, in the theater when I was 7, but I wasn't too impressed either. It wasn't until I got older that I came to appreciate it. I didn't think it was bad, but it didn't blow me away or anything. I think a lot of the humor went over my head, and I was more into Sci-Fi than Fantasy or Fairy Tale type stuff. Not to mention that I had even less interest in a love story than Fred Savage's character.
See you guys at the 10 year prison reunion - Ben Richards
I was just thinking that this movie must be like one of those inside jokes.. "I guess you had to be there" ...
I grew up on fantasy films like this (Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal, Beetlejuice), but I didn't see this one until recently (at 34 years old) and I thought it was really, really boring.
