The Most Underrated Movie Ever?

Well Horror movie anyways... It blows my mind that this movie isn't more regarded as one of the best movies ever in horror.

reply

Ditto. It's criminally under-rated. Nor can I understand why so many Carpenter fans dislike it as it's quintessential Carpenter. Time for me to shamelessly plug our fansite for the movie over at www.jcpod.net.

reply

Definitely one of 'em (Most Underrated).

Not only is it quintessential Carpenter, but some of the most personal, as it's one of the few he wrote on his own as well as directed...and it's informed with a lot of his influences and obsessions from the time. Somewhere I read he thinks of POD as a personal favorite of his; definitely one of mine, too. But then I just watch it; he made it!

reply

Yeah?

I can see how it could be your favorite. I really enjoyed it too, but I think it's downfall is its pacing. It's REALLY slow. I know, I know, it's building mood/tension/characters. That's a totally legit reason for a movie to be slow but I (personally) feel "The Thing" pulled that off in a much better fashion, with more 'action'.

There's more to talk about with PoD for sure, but not everyone is looking for that in a movie. It doesn't appeal to the mainstream, and lets face it the mainstream is what determines a movie's status.

PoD is an awesome cult classic and is very well written if you're willing to buy into it's message, but what're you going to do?

reply

"It doesn't appeal to the mainstream, and lets face it the mainstream is what determines a movie's status."

...excellent point, and one that too many people forget in their foolish pursuit of artistic purity. I agree that at times the film is a little slow and probably loses plenty of the mainstream for this reason. But I would also say that, as mentioned above, the musical score does a great job of building tension as does the acting for the best part (big fan of Donald Pleasance), and overall this makes for an enjoyable film for horror buffs or Carpenter fans.

As I am definitely both, I have no complaints!! Well written, atmospheric and laden with apocalyptic doom- Carpenter at his best!

The pacing works for me; such a slow burn, a relentless disquiet with practically no moment of relief anywhere.

reply

i'm afraid its written by martin quatermass, and judged along side his other films, POD is pretty dire....

reply

You're entitled to your opinion on the film, but I'm afraid Martin Quatermass IS John Carpenter, or vice versa. Heard of pseudonyms? Originally Quatermass was also credited for directing Halloween. Not a bad film for someone who doesn't exist.

reply

well i didnt know that, thats good to know. however i maintain my other points and wonder if he used an alias because he knew it wasnt very good. not a bad film, i agree, A VERY VERY BAD FILM, in fact apart from VAMPIRES, its the worst thing "martin quatermass" ever did, i'm also very sad to see he's willing to sell out and let any old prick remake his films to an increasingly low standard, nice one john, i look forward to a piss poor remake of P.O.D (well at least it might have a couple of actors in it), heres hoping THE THING(WITH SHINY ACTORS AND SUPERMODELS NOT SPEAKING NORWEGIAN) never gets released, christ!!!

reply

Haha i guess we'll have to disagree on the quality of the film then. I can say that Vampires didn't really do much for me though. Also, POD is far from my favourite Carpenter film. My List: The Thing, Escape From New York, Halloween, They Live, Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog. I just place it higher than, say, Vampires, Escape from LA and Village of the Damned, for example. I just think it should be at least as well respected as those three *beep* fests. Oh, and fingers crossed The Thing remake goes straight to hell before a new generation of cinema- goers try and tell me how good "that new horror movie....in Antarctica" is. I've had that with The Fog already!

reply

however i maintain my other points and wonder if he used an alias because he knew it wasnt very good.

You sir, are an *beep*
Carpenter wrote They Live as Frank Armitage.
Did he do it because he thought They Live sucked or was going to suck ?
Educate yourself, read, watch, whatever, before being stupid.

John Carpenter is a fan of the Quatermass stories. Stories created by Nigel Kneale. The main character continually finds Alien threats to humanity. He's portrayed in TV, and then done homage to in several movies. He had a brother who was a science fiction writer named Martin.

If you read this...

http://phantomframe.co.uk/qua_pit.htm

..you'll realize all these people get their inspiration from somewhere.

Carpenter is always putting little references to Quatermass into his movies. Apparently he likes to pay homage to Kneale's work.

reply

He used the name Quatermass because the storyline is reminiscent of the Quatermass stories that Carpenter grew up with. It is his homage. He didn't use the name because he was ashamed of his work. Frankly, this is his best work.

reply

I agree, one of the best he did. I love this film. The mysterious messages, the ending. It was great. You were left with this feeling the story was ongoing. How a sequel was not made is a mystery. It was ripe for one. Most likely would not have done this film justice, but it was definately left open to be made.

great film.

and I loved his other films as well.

reply

I was just waiting for Michael Myers to pop out of the corner with Dr Loomis chasing him "Hes not HUMANNN!"

reply

I think it would easily be one of the top contenders for the most OVERRATED movie ever. The movie is insanely lame on so many levels.

reply

Prince of Darkness is an AWESOME flick and it's classic John Carpenter. He made some of the creepiest movies in the back then. Halloween, The Thing, The Fog, Prince of Darkness, Halloween 2, In the Mouth of Madness, Big Trouble in Little China, etc.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.

reply

He didnt have that much to do with Halloween 2.

I love Carpenter a lot, but PoD isn't very good. I guess I could see why some people find it so underrated, because there are some Carpenter elements that find its way in and make it interesting, but I saw it once, and don't have any desire to see it again. They Live is a far more underrated Carpenter film.

reply

Both They Live and Prince of Darkness are better when you look deeper into them. There is a really neat story being told beneath the obvious, whether it is the allegories to the rich and powerful ensuring that that rich get richer and the poor get poorer, or the truth about religion and how it is nothing like what people believe at all. I like both films the same. The only short coming is that they came later in Carpenter's career, and his stars were not break outs like in his early days when he ushered in the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis and Kurt Russell (yes, I know Kurt was around since childhood, but he really came into his own in Carpenter's films).

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

I like to think the "Trilogy" is The Thing, POD and INMOM.

reply

I personally didn't find this movie to be very good but this never felt like a mess of ideas mind you, Carpenter is a fan of Kneale and his influences are there, they just weren't executed properly. It had cool concepts which horror movies rarely saw, as they were more commonplace to sci-fi, specially those written by Kneale like his Quatermass and other stories.

Nonetheless, Carpenter had a good thing going on when he tried to include those concepts into an horror movie, and it did have a very promising start, however I felt it fell apart half-way through because it turned into a regular, and not so good horror flick fast when they decided to include the zombie-hobos and mindless killings. This stark contrast wouldn't be so apparent, if the beggining were more like your regular zombie/ghost flick instead of the interesting monologue by victor wong which set the eerie mood between science and paranormal.

What this movie should've done IMO, was TAKE IT'S TIME to develop the characters, create scary situations and technobabble with all that equipment which would contribute to a creepier atmosphere just like The Stone Tape from Kneale (this one drags its pace but it's a TV Movie from the 70's) or Poltergeist. It needed that psychological fear from The Thing who did this masterfully, not random people dying left and right to hobos and possessed girls. It tries to delve back into science with the Dream Messages and the Anti-God but the harm was done by now. The mirror scene however, is one of the most original scenes from horror movie history imo.

People cannot call this movie underrated in any way as it is: a good premise which was severely dumbed down until it's would-be original conclusion.

reply

Underrated, overrated, or neither, I do find this movie to be a cult classic nonetheless.

Welcome to my Nightmare- Freddy Krueger

reply

Indeed its a very good horror movie and way underated if you compare it to the crap that got released the last decade. I dont get it how its rating is below 7 in this website.

reply

what bothered me about this film is that they spent so much time acting like what they discovered should turn the whole church upside down, with everything that everyone thought being warped. I didn't get that. I didn't know the bible said much about Satan at all, for people to be so misguided about what evil is or whatever.

Maybe it's that I never got the mythology, that I don't see what a big deal is when they find the cylinder besides knowing that evil exists.

It didn't seem so shocking and I was shocked that so many students were alone with the cylinder, and there was no buddy system when they are dealing with something so powerful, that they soon learned can alter objects from a short distance... but it's cool to leave people down there alone? what the hell?

I just thought so many character choices were ridiculous and I was in no way shocked by what they learned. And what's with the Asian chick being annoyed that the asian guy thought she looked asian? was she actually native american or something, because she looked asian... native Americans are descended from Mongolians anyways, so it's not far from the truth if she was. What was the attitude for?

And why didn't he start digging his own way out of the closet? Be a man, and help yourself... stop being a baby. He didn't start digging until it was nearly too late, and I hate that fake tension building.

To me this is another mediocre John Carpenter film, and that's typically what he does. He is no master of horror, if you ask me. Just a quick look at the ratings his films get, you can see there are so many "underrated" films. To me, they aren't at all. They all deserve their scores. 5s and 6s... nothing to write home about. The Ting is obviously his best, and that was a remake, not something original. And while I think Halloween is a classic and isn't a terrible franchise, it's not the best slasher film around to me. I just don't get the cult following. He's alright and this film is alright.

Maybe if Satan/the devil scared me, I could get the overall theme better, but as an atheist... meh. I've seen scaring christian themed horror films... The Exorcist for example.

reply

Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China. Carpenter was a genius and ahead of his time. Go back and watch Big Trouble. The effects in that movie look like they were done just yesterday. The reason he has such a big cult following is because he was ahead of his time. ALL of his movies from the 80s hold up. You are in the minority of people who think he doesn't deserve the cult following. The 4 movies I mentioned are very popular here in 2013 as well as a few of his other movies. You say Prince of Darkness is nothing to write home about. I've seen practically every horror movie you've heard of from the 80s and Prince of Darkness is definitely one of the better slow burners and it is scary as hell.

His worst movies from the 80s like They Live ever gets decent ratings on here. I don't know what 5s and 6s you are talking about. But when it comes to the 80s and late 70, in 2013 all of these movies are well perceived.

Assault on Precinct 13
Elvis
Halloween
The Thing
The Fog
Escape From New York
Christine
Starman
Big Trouble in Little China
They Live
In the Mouth of Madness

There aren't many if ANY director's from this time period with such an impressive filmography. No clunkers. Brilliant brilliant man and the fact that you "don't get" the love for Carpenter only makes you less brilliant.

reply

I love it's slow pace, personally. I think it's easily Carpenter's best writing on film.

reply

Likewise; certainly among his best. Watched it again today after not seeing it in a few years, and was still impressed by how that slow burn, the ever-present sense of disquiet, gets under your skin.

reply

This movie scared THE HELL out of me! I don't scare easy, but this one definitely worked.

I have no idea why it's so underrated.

I kinda hate when people focus on "Carpenter" rather than just watching the movie for what it is. This isn't one of those films where you analyze camera angles, and styles of dialoge...You just watch it as if the writers, directors, and film crews had nothing to do with it. Then you see why it's such a good movie.

When I saw it for the first time I had no idea who John Carpenter was...When I was finally old enough to start understanding why writers, and director's were important I went in search of Carpenter movies that were like this one...and this is the ONLY one.

It's also one of those movies that doesn't get any less unsettling when people bash it, and make it out to be such a terrible movie.

At the end of the day it's all just opinions. Lots of people love it, lots of people hate it, and that's life. Just like green peppers on pizza, or classical music. Neither good or bad, only good or bad to whoever is experiencing it personally.

reply

It's a great 80's horror flick that's definitely one of
Carpenter's most underrated films.

reply

Along with the The Thing, it's my favourite JC film.

I love the slow pace in how it builds the enormity of what they've discovered.

A secret that completely nullifies the church and reveals that there is a dominant evil ready to have a crack at the world. Better still that it's beginnings would start in some little known deserted church.

An epic film that really got my imagination juices flowing when I first saw it and it's never let up since in it's tension.

A cracking piece of work.

Agreed, I think it's Carpenter's best horror film after The Thing. It's scary on so many levels, from intellectual to instinctive.

The music, the dialogue, the well-written characters, the whole idea, expressed in the beginning, that "while order does exist in the universe, it is not at all what we had in mind", that religion got it all wrong, and quantum science's progress, the understanding of antimatter and dark matter will only unveil unfathomable horrors to us, all of this, combined with the well-paced tension, and classical scares like demonic possession, your allies turning on you, bugs, rotting flesh, unnatural wounds, etc., creeped me out a lot more than any other horror film had done recently.
Even the twist at the end wasn't cheesy and unnecessary, as is often the case.

Horror directors should take this as an example and put more thought in their films.

To light a candle is to cast a shadow...

reply

Couldn't agree more.

The build up to the 2nd part was amazing, the music was so ominous and the dream sequences probably the creepiest/f-k-c-a-mega-sh-!-t scariest things I've ever seen.

I had bad dreams for days afterwards.

reply

Have to agree. Certainly a 8/10 at least. It has humour, scares and some great ideas, all blended in with some good actors and as per usual great score you always get with Carpenter films

reply

Could not agree more.

Great plot, great cast, great music, and great special effects. I have nothing in common with the people who bash this film, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

In my opinion, it's a horror masterpiece which is way deeper than people realize, and it actually freaks me out, unlike 98% of the horror movies I watch.

Glad to see there are others who feel the same way.
