What else do we know about Mahoneys father???

In the first movie he is mentioned as a loyal friend to the police officer who sent him to the Police Academy to begin with. Were there ever any other references to him ?

It seemed to me also we knew litle or nothing about Carey Mahoney,which is unusual for a leading role.
