Just before you see the grandpa speaking quietly to one of his henchman.. we are to assume that's what they were talking about.
I thought it was weird that Hawk knew Gramps was sending people after him.

Yes, the grandpa sent the guys to bring the boy back to him. When the kid asked why they did that, Hawk says "ask your grandfather."
Hawk had a long history with the grandfather, so that's why he knew who did it... or at least was pretty sure.
