Stallone's physique

I was a bit surprised how skinny Stallone looked in a movie supposed to be the among world's strongest arm wrestlers. Those guys are literally monsters, while he basically looked like an average gym rat, hell even I have arms almost his size in this movie. Remind you this is ten years after Rocky, they could have fatten him up a bit, put him on some steroids. Perhaps there are reasons, but it didn't seem believable.

Average gym rat, get the F outta here.

Muscle size isn't the only part of muscle strength. It's also about the type of fibres you have. e.g. Jet Li could probably win an arm wrestle with a lot of Western people twice his size.

If Rocky Balboa listened to Lady Gaga...is this the movie we'd get? http://youtu.be/o_tPQzEkqQo

skinny???!!! are you kidding me?? watch the scene when hes let out of jail, he looks huge

reply

yes even his forearms alone were bigger than most of the other "bigger" guys in the movie. stallone's weight has always fluctuated a fair bit to even try and guess what his weight was at any particular time like this movie for example.

but he was far from small in this. not as big as he has been for years now though.

The only scene where I thought he looked thinner was when he was hosing his truck down at the very beginning during the opening credits. Otherwise especially during the arm wrestling scenes, his biceps bulged!

In the weigh in scene they said he was 190. I would say he's huge for that weight. How tall is he really though?

Keep in mind a couple of things.

1) Fat is stored in the muscle as well as in the skin. Think about the fat you have to cut out of a cheap steak. The bald guy who played the arm wrestling champ was indeed huge, but also fat. If he were to get lean, he would be no bigger than Stallone. Stallone was very lean, so everything you saw was over 90% muscle.

2) Arm wrestling is mostly about internal rotation of the upper arm (humerus bone.) The prmary muscle for this is the Teres Major which is a small internal muscle that you can't even see. You could have the strongest/largest Teres Major muscle in the world, and nobody would be able to tell by looking at you.

3) While muscle power is a big factor in arm wrestling ability, there are also things like bone length, muscle insertion points, etc. that can give you a huge advantage or weakness based on leverage.

Well here's the thing. Stallone had put one quite a bit of mass while training for Rocky 2. But he wasn't happy with his looks, as he felt he didn't have the definition that he wanted. So he went on a very tough diet during the early 80s (eating only 40 egg whites a day) and also working out like crazy.

So he lost a lot of weight. This is evident in the movies "Victory", "First Blood", "Rocky 3" etc. Then he slowly started to bulk up on muscle while trying not to gain much fat. So he looks muscular but not too beefy in movies like "Rocky IV", "Over The Top", "Cobra". It was in "Rambo 3" that he really reached is peak.

So that is why he looks the way he does in OTT. And also Sly loves the whole "David vs Goliath" mythos. So him looking small in front of a huge Bull Hurley was a conscious decision. The commentator also mentions this, "Or should we say, David and Goliath".

He used that same line in "Rocky IV". When the commentator says, "It is a true case of David and Goliath". I guess Sly liked to make the bad guys as big as possible so people would cheer harder when he, the small guy, defeats them.

"I'm the dude, playing a dude that's disguised as another dude".

I'm not sure if this is true, but perhaps arm wrestling is like punching. Its not how big your muscle is, its how quickly you activate your muscles and tense them on impact that creates force.

Bruce Lee was puney but believe you me, he could punch harder than a heavy weight boxer.
