DVD sources?

Has anyone noticed that the DVD transfer appears to have some moments that were transferred from what looks like a VHS source? Nobody seems to address this in DVD reviews, but one early scene when the little brother answers the front door is a good example, though it happens other times too. Does anyone know what happened? Is the original print damaged beyond repair?

That's what I thought, but going by memory I recall a few scenes that definitely were in the film originally and looked terrible in this version...however I'm not 100% certain on that claim.

My guess is that the source files are missing and that these stand-out moments are lifts from VHS or some other format. But yeah, they stand out like a sore thumb. Had there been any budget for the DVD release (or five minutes spent in front of Final Cut or Avid), the contrast could have been at the very least tweaked to make these shots less sore-thumb-ish.
