Why did Cher wanted Cage so bad for the role?

Given their age difference, what was the deal? Why did she love him so much and how did they know each other before the movie?

At the time Cher made Moonstruck, she was 41 and in love with (and living with) Rob Camilletti who was 23. At the time she met him a year earlier, he was working as a *baker*, which prompted the press to call him 'bagel boy'. They lived together for three years and have remained friends. In a 2013 interview, Cher referred to him as 'the one true, real love' of her life. There is a photo of the two in this article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2193266/As-Cher-66-prepares-marry-Hells-Angel-24-years-junior-bedded.html

Nicolas Cage was also 23 when he played her love interest in Moonstruck and there is some physical resemblance between the two men. She was probably looking for an actor she had good chemistry with, which would improve her performance, and Nicolas would have reminded her of Rob.

Apparently this strategy worked and Rob was sitting next to her when she won her Oscar for Moonstruck.

I've met Rob, btw. I don't see a resemblance, though.

I also wonder if this film would have been even better, if Cher had not starred in it. I think someone like Geena Davis or Sigourney Weaver could have done justice to the role of Loretta. I also think that Ray Liotta would have made an interesting Ronny. I like the film and much of it's popularity comes from Cher's presence, however I am hard pushed to feel that it was an Oscar worthy performance. As for Cage, he was adequate, but I don't think he was the best choice.

Nicolas Cage was "okay...." in it. He at least didn't ruin the movie like he did in Peggy Sue Got Married. He was still a bit weak in Moonstruck, but was otherwise serviceable as the loser little brother. It didn't call for too much, thank goodness.
