What are they dropping into the champagne?

Actually I don't know if it was Champagne or what, I'd be interested to know too..... it looked like they dropped in sugar cubes. Is this a common Italian drink, sugared sparkling wine? Is it good? It sounds gross but hey, I'm up for new experiences....... Anyone know the answer?

reply

Yes it was sugar cubes. It's just an Italian tradition though I guess it does sweeten the Champagne a bit. I think it's usually done with Asti Spumanti, an Italian version of Champagne, but you can use Champagne.

Actually, Asti Spumanti is sweeter than Champagne, so perhaps they add the sugar cube to Champagne to make it taste more like Spumanti.

reply

Sugar cubes are used in the making of a champagne cocktail. In my Italian household we never put sugar in any kind of wine, especially sparkling wine.

reply

Dopey me...all this time I was thinking it was Alka Seltzer to make it more "sparkly". LOL

Please do not attack me for my opinions...we're all entitled to them. :)

reply

LOL i thought the same, advil or something? even as i question the logic of mixing alcohol with medicine!
who'd think to put sugar? obviously i'm not italian!

reply

I thought the same thing.

reply

Dropping the sugar cubes in the champagne had nothing to do with the taste. It is hard to explain the tradition but it has to do with good fortune or better yet, good luck which plays into the theme of Loretta's life.

reply

It looked like they were dropping candied almonds in the champagne which are popular Italian desserts, often mixed in with Italian cookies.

Wish for a sweet life

It increases the effervescence and sweetness of the wine, and symbolizes the wish that your life will be the same.

Which explains a lot since Loretta talked about luck all the time.

reply

But they were drinking Mums which is a brand of Champagne. Loretta asks for it by name when she goes to the liquor store.

reply

Mums? I thought it had a BRUT medallion. Forgive me as I know nothing about wine, Asti Spumante, or soi-disant Champagne.

reply

Or it were ice cubes... That is pretty common.

reply

Nah- definitely sugar cubes. He gets them from the sugar bowl on the table. Sometimes, a sugar cube soaked in brandy is popped into champagne as well.

reply

A) Asti Spumanti B) one sugar cube in each glass to make it fizz like mad

reply

I could swear it was Asti Spumante she was buying originally, in which case adding sugar cubes to it would make it undrinkable by my standards.

reply

It was Mumms. She asks for it by name, and you can tell it's their label.

That's the champagne I had at my wedding. Talk about bad luck.

I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit

reply
