Actually I don't know if it was Champagne or what, I'd be interested to know too..... it looked like they dropped in sugar cubes. Is this a common Italian drink, sugared sparkling wine? Is it good? It sounds gross but hey, I'm up for new experiences....... Anyone know the answer?
shareYes it was sugar cubes. It's just an Italian tradition though I guess it does sweeten the Champagne a bit. I think it's usually done with Asti Spumanti, an Italian version of Champagne, but you can use Champagne.
Actually, Asti Spumanti is sweeter than Champagne, so perhaps they add the sugar cube to Champagne to make it taste more like Spumanti.
Sugar cubes are used in the making of a champagne cocktail. In my Italian household we never put sugar in any kind of wine, especially sparkling wine.
