I believe this may be one of those films...

that you can only really enjoy now if you grew up with it. I normally love these kind of films from the 80's but I just watched this one for the first time and it was for the most pretty painful. A few funny moments but it wasn't anywhere near as good as The Goonies.

I cant stand the Goonies. I can relate to the kids in the Goonies, but the kids in Monster Squad, WERE ME AND MY FRIENDS. To a t. I sat in the Principles office for all the same reasons. Yes I grew up with both films, I have never gotten the urge to watch GOONIES...MS on the other hand...I may watch it tonight.

But I will keep in mind your statement of "that you can only really enjoy now if you grew up with it"

I understand where you are coming from. I still think MS is a better movie that Goonies though

The Goonies is excellent!

reply

Monster squad is better than goonies

reply

That's just your opinion. Could you not state it as a fact? lol

reply

Nah, the Goonies is definitely better.

reply

maybe. I can't say, because i grew up with this, and the goonies...though i didn't see either until about 1991..when i was about 9

monster squad is a ton of fun, so is goonies

i put them both up on the same pedestal.

but i kinda of agree, if someone today just saw monster squad for the first time..they probably won't like it..it is flawed

reply

I just watched it for the first time today after hearing about it for so many years and I thought it was just okay. Not as excellent as many say it is, but not terrible either. I do think it would be a wonderful horror movie to show kids who aren't quite old enough to watch more adult themed horror movies yet, though.

Burn, witch! Burn, witch! Burn! Burn! Burn!

reply

Ya see, there ya go! I probably would have loved it as a kid but watching it as an adult just didn't work for me.

I saw this movie for the first time today. Somehow I didn't even hear about the film until just a few years ago, so I have no childhood attachment to it, but I thought it was a lot of fun. Seeing the classic monsters roaming through a very 1980s atmosphere was good enough on its own, but the child characters really made the movie for me. I also love the fact that, for a movie aimed at kids, it didn't shy away from profanity, sexual humor, genuinely threatening violence and the implication that the "Scary German Guy" survived a concentration camp. Plus, the kids handled guns like badasses. While it's definitely a cliched and flawed movie in many ways, it was a lot of fun. My only regret is that it wasn't a movie I grew up with, I know for sure that I would have loved it as a kid.

Nice post.

I grew up watching many movies, seen so many and if I didn't see this movie as a kid and seen it now, I would still like it, but if not the 20 year anniversary edition it would be clouded, especially for a first viewing, but my old VHS recording holds that mist that grey black that those quality tapes had for the time, nostalgia or w.e it is, it's magical in a sense, and growing up with it an ENHANCED version only heightens the movie for me. something about movies when I was younger, of course that comes with being a young human being haha they had a magical aura about them, example, Legend, and Labyrinth both struck my mind, heart, soul greatly. That aura still exists but it's different having experienced a few decades of actual reality.

Monster Squad was awesome, a bunch of friends family fighting off Dracula and company, having Frankie as a friend, it was imho incredible for it's time, as a kid watching this with my sisters and family, wow we watched it all the time, rewinded it like crazy and just loved it so much

I think many people don't really enjoy themselves anymore, they pick things apart and look for the flaws, while missing the magic that is in the movie, everyone is a critic I guess ya I can't deny it about myself, but for the most part I enjoy myself and have a great respect for those who make the entertainment I pay for, and almost share the same love passion for such entertainment, I wish I could do movies for a living, so jelly.

I remember growing up magic in movies my imagination on fire I can still see some of that magic, the fire still burns.

Ya know what? I can totally understand how someone would love this film.
I'm pretty sure if I watched it back when I was a kid, I Would have loved it!
I think it was just poor timing.
For example, I showed my friend "The Lost Boys" recently (he is 27)
and he hated it! That blew my mind lol but I guess it's the same thing.
He probably would have liked it if he watched it when he was younger too.

reply

While it's not the best movie every made, I wouldn't call Monster Squad painful. I caught the first half on chiller a while ago and I enjoyed it.

I personally liked the Goonies more but this is still in my top 20 80s movies list.

reply

I grew up with it and will love it forever.
My wife watched it for the first time with me about 2 years ago. She also loved it.
My son watches it a few times a year now which I am glad of in case he actually DID watch it for the firs time as an adult and hates it. So all good!

reply

The argument could be made that most adults today who might see The Goonies for the first time would find it uninteresting, too.

reply

I thinkthat argument could honestly apply to any 80s movie.

That is probably it lol. There's just something cheesy about the era for film.
Don't get me wrong, I love 80s films. But only the ones that I grew up watching.

reply

Always thought it had one of the best movie posters ever made.

reply

I just watched it for the first time at 30 and I certainly didn't find it painful. It may not be a patch on The Goonies or the Lost Boys but I found it quite an entertaining little picture with likeable characters, plenty of fun movie references and a tongue-in-cheek approach to horror tropes. Not a classic, but a worthwhile watch.

reply

I understand your thinking, but it's different for me personally.
I only watched it once, when I was a kid, aged around 7 (I was born in '88).
To be frank, I only remembered several seconds of it.

So, I watched it a few days ago, with no nostalgia to cloud my mind... and I loved it.
It's funny, it's cheesy, it's over the top... it's a magnificent film with very high replayability.
