I'm gonna get technical here but back in the day, people thought that is a young woman didn't have a hymen, that she wasn't a virgin because they believed that you lost it when you had sex. While you can lose it that way, there are plenty of other ways that they could lose their hymen. Funny story is that when Diana was about to marry Prince Charles, she was given a medical exam. The purpose of this exam was to check and see is she was still a virgin. They didn't say that outright but that was the main reason for it. I'm sure they did the same thing for Kate Middleton as well.
