so why was Rudy hanging out with younger kids?

Something That I have wondered about a lot was,
Why did Rudy hang out with the Monster Squad, and why didn't he have any other friends?

He seemed like the coolest kid in the school, And at first it seemed that he just wanted to join the club to spy on the girl, But did he had other friends? It's just something that always makes me wonder because he is supposed to be so cool, but he is hanging out with 12 year olds lol.
He also didn't seem to have any other friends.

One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Well I dont think he hung around them before he saved fatkid from getting beat up by EJ

Gamesystems never become obsolete if they are still fun to play

I guess I was just wondering how he didn't seem to have any friends his age. You never see him talking to anyone his age for the whole movie.
Like not even when he was eating when the kids asked him if he knew any virgins.

It always seemed weird to me that even at the very end he was alone with the kids fighting the monsters, It's like he could have called friends his age to help fight the monsters but he never did.

So he never had any friends, which seemed weird to me since he was so cool

I don't think there's one definitive answer myself. Patrick's sister for one but I also think he probably enjoyed how much the guys looked up to him. He may have also pitied them slightly initially. Eventually they bonded.

I was wondering from a slightly different standpoint. Specifically the relationship between Rudy and Horace.

Horace is getting beat up by EJ, and Rudy comes along and saves him. Rudy seems to do this not because of any great hatred for EJ, but rather because Horace is his friend.

But this is the last we ever hear of this friendship.

For the rest of the film, Rudy and Horace don't speak, and when they are administering the Monster Test, Horace takes great pleasure from Rudy being unable to answer the question put to him (and this is despite the fact it was Horace's idea to invite Rudy to begin with).

But to answer the original question, sometimes there are people in school who seem like dorks to kids their own age, but like gods to younger kids. I suspect Rudy - with his 1950's James Dean stylings - would have seemed like a total dork to the kids in junior high, but like the king of the hill to the elementary kids.

Or perhaps he was just tired of living up to his image and wanted somewhere to 'belong'.

Or perhaps he just wanted to spy in Patrick's sister.

but the question was, why didn't have friends his own age and why did he bother hanging out with little kids. specially since he was such a tough guy
