Where did the money go? The budget was 22M. while Predator had only 15M.

And Predator is a very good action/survival horror flick with awesome scenery, make-up and special effects, whereas this is beyond cheesy and lame, with a very fake looking in every aspect of the movie

Wasn't PREDATOR filmed in a real jungle? They probably saved money on sets, and costumes.

LOL, filming in the jungle is waaay more expensive than doing so in a studio.

It was filmed in Mexico, which is apparetly much cheaper. So that's probably your answer.

Predator didn't need to spend on sets and multiple make up effects. As well as futuristic weapons and vehicles. Again, in the multiples.

Predator had one creature with a few weapons. Masters of the Universe had multiple make up effects creatures (Gwildor, Skeletor, Saurod, Beastman, and Karg) along with an army of robot mooks and vehicles.

What sets? And i have previously said, filming in the jungle is much more expensive than shooting in the studio

By the way, the Predator has a mobile mandibles, becomes invisible and has infrared vision, the "creatures" in MOTU are dudes with horrible and laughable Halloween masks.

reply

Spoken like someone who's never had to light anything. The jungle provides natural lighting. That big ball of for in the sky gives free light.

A set has to be lit. With electricity. That costs money. The Castle Grayskull set was huge. It cost money to build, paint, dress, and light.

The predator was one creature. The mercenaries were four. Plus gwildor. Plus skeletor. That's six. Six is more than one. And that's not counting the dozen or so shock troops.

And let's not forget the hover boards, skeletor's hover tank. The many weapons. All the explosions. The various special effects with the cosmic key.

I don't think you actually watched the movie.

reply

There were a ton of costumes in this movie, some vehicles, Grayskull was pretty elaborate. The Predator had the one creature and some explosions. If you can't see how one costs more, I don't know what else to say to you.

It went on two things,

1 - Vaseline and other lube products for the deleted gay scenes.

2 - hush money to stop people finding out he-man is gay.

Nobody likes a gay hero.

You again.

james0070, have you ever heard the phrase "you are what you hate"?

The answer is... The Castle Greyskull set. That set was intense. If I remember correctly it was actually made of marble and had many different levels. Can you imagine the cost of that thing? Not only must the materials have cost a fortune, but the manpower and labor costs must have been insane! I honestly can't believe that it was never used again in any other movie. It was a stunning set, amidst a rather terrible (but occasionally fun) film.

Memories, you're talking about memories.

reply

Yeah, the set was the largest (taking two big soundstages) and most expensive one at the time. It was so big that even personalities like Michael Jackson came to visit it.

I'm not sure what film you watched. This movie's production looked really high class. You should check out Flash Gordon (1980) and you'll see a similar themed fantasy movie that actually looks cheap and fake (why? Because it costs an absolute fortune to make something in that genre not look nasty).

Whatever flaws you can pick apart in this movie, the one thing (imo) you pretty much can't argue with was the scope of the whole thing. It's a great looking movie that's still impressive to take in to this day.

You know back before the war broke out I was a saucier in San Antone

reply

Agreed.

The movie actually would have cost way more (like $40 million) if such talented people as Richard Edlund and William Stout hadn't worked on it and saved costs.

You're comparing in the best aging film ever made to one of Cannon's better movies. That's like comparing fillet mignon to Fritos.

There are some considerations to be made in understanding the budgets. Firstly, Masters of the Universe has many more effects shots, big unique sets, far more costumers, makeups, and props. Arnold was not yet making T2 money in '87, though he was on the verge.

To their credit, this is one of the Cannon films that looks like a major studio job. There's only a few effects that don't work out too well, but you can see the same mistakes in Hollywood flicks.
