Based on a book?

The film Malone seems to be based on a one shot book by the title 'Hardacre'. The book came out sometime in the mid 1970s and Malone seems like it was almost taken verbatim from the book. The only slight changes are that the book character used a LeMat shotgun whereas Reynolds used a sawed off shotgun and a .44 Magnum. The storyline is exactly the same. Unknown guy travelling crosscountry to find someplace he can call home, car breaks down in small town, etc, etc.

Not the first film to do this and certainly not the last. Road House with Swayze is loosley based on the same premise.

yes, but the credits list the book as:
SHOTGUN by William Wingate

well known for obscurity

Hardacre is the name of the character, and "Shotgun" the novel the film is based on. Interesting, though, that this isn't listed in the opening credits, which is where this credit is almost always included.

Same book. It was published under various names, including both "Shotgun" and "Hardacre."
