I was thinking the same thing while watching.
Bond, these guys you are saving are one day going to fly Boeing aircraft into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon near Washington D.C., 3000 people die, buildings drop at freefall speed and tower columns pulverize into dust without explanation, and here you are saving them.
No. It was the Taliban who invaded and took over Afghanistan after they defeated the Russians in 1996 or so. The people Bond helped in this movie were not the Taliban
shareThe Taliban broke off from the Mujahideen shortly after this movie was made. The same thing can be seen with Rambo 3, complete with an incredibly embarrassed card at the close of the film.
Like many regimes over the years, the US supported people of questionable character to get rid of another. This particular misstep came back to bite them in the ass moreso than any of the others they supported over the years.
Now they got it for free.
