Eastern Jewel, aka Yoshiko Kawashima
One of the characters in the film is Eastern Jewel, a cousin of Puyi. She had grown up in Japan and learned Japanese and adopted the name of Yoshiko Kawashima. She worked for the Japanese in China and led quite a wild life, dressing in men's suits and military uniforms and taking on a host of powerful Japanese men as lovers, benefactors and sugar daddies. There's a new book about her by Phyllis Birnbaum entitled "Manchu Princess, Japanese Spy: The Story of Kawashima Yoshiko, the Cross-Dressing Spy Who Commanded Her Own Army." The book does not support the movie's depiction of Eastern Jewel, who, in the film says things like "I want to bomb Shanghai, I hate China," something the real person would never have said.
There are other films either about Kawashima or with her as a character: KAWASHIMA YOSHIKO (1990, aka, THE LAST PRINCESS OF MANCHURIA), starring Anita Mui; LADY KARATE (1976), starring Chia Ling; and THE RAID (1991), with Joyce Godenzi as the character. I've reviewed all three for IMDB.
