I've just watched this for the 1st time & wanted to post & ask is that REALLY how the family found out Ritchie was dead??? Over the radio???

You know me, I'm not one to gossip but you'll never guess what I heard...

I highly doubt that's how the family found out. That was one of many scenes in this film that didn't ring true for me.

This movie is awesome. I think the movie is extra good for me because i live in mason city and have for 20 years. Mason city is the home of the airport where their plane took off. I have gone to the surf ballroom many times. I have been to the memorial. Sad story, great movie.

I grew up in Iowa, too. :)

I've seen the movie several times and though I always cry at the end, this is the first time I've watched it since I've become a mother (I have a 3 year old and a 9 month old). I just sobbed watching his mother. I can't even imagine losing a child...it is almost too painful for me to watch. My heart just breaks for that family.

I'd like to visit Iowa one day!

What is even more interesting is that Connie died in real life the year this film came out. Don't know if it was before or after it was released in the year though.

reply

She was in the family party scene xx

Ritchie's mother Connie died in October 1987 ... the movie was released in the US in July 1987.

Bob Keane just died. He ripped off the Valenzuelas for years giving them peanuts for royalties. Led Zeppelin did a bit of one of his tunes and credited it to Mrs. Valenzuela and I believe it never got to her. He smoked many many performers on his label, surf bands, pop stars, etc.. Typical for the day. I doubt if Ritchie got anywhere near his money due, cooked books were the norm and hilarious record royalty rates, off the book pressings, mob pressings, etc..

reply

TimeTun, I'm just wondering where you got that information from, regarding Bob Keane. According to everything that I've read he treated Ritchie like his own Son and was devastated by the loss of Ritchie.

Connie had collaborated with the filmmakers. In an interview for the premiere, she said that Esai Morales did such a good job that he BECAME Bob.

It was a very emotional ending. The use of the song Sleepwalk during the scene where Ritchie's Mother finds out about his death emphasised the tragedy within the scene.

No matter how many times I watch La Bamba, I always cry at the end.

reply

One of the saddest scenes/endings ever.

reply

It is a powerfully emotional scene, but the one thing I don't get is that when Ritchie's mother found out he was dead, she flung the load of laundry she was holding completely over her head. One would think considering their relationship as mother and son, that she would be on the brink of collapse and dropping the laundry to the ground would seem more realistic.

i think a better ending would have been ritchie makes the flight to the destination only to find la migra waiting for him. Upon deportation the plane carrying Ritchie crashes just south of juarez.

reply

OK Troll McTrollson, you DO realize that Ritchie Valens was born in the U.S. so your film ending makes no sense??

Yeah, I thought so.

reply

"La Bamba" was a great movie about family. They seemed so close.

reply

I teared up during the ending for the first time yesterday. : ]

reply

I always tear up too and I've seen this movie hundreds of times. "Sleepwalk" will forever remind me of that ending scene.
